🎃 It's nearly Halloween! So, here are 7 spooky facts you might not know... 👻

🕯️ 1. Older than Christianity
Halloween has roots in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, celebrated around 1st November to mark the end of summer. It was believed that the boundary between the living and the dead became thinner at this time of year.

🦇 2. The fear is real
Believe it or not, Samhainophobia is the recognised fear of Halloween! For some people, the spooky season is genuinely frightening.

🎩 3. Houdini's Halloween ending
Famous magician Harry Houdini died on Halloween night in 1926.

🐈‍⬛ 4. Black cats and witches
Folklore has long linked black cats with witches. Sadly, this association can even make black cats harder to rehome around Halloween.

🎃 5. The legend of Stingy Jack
Irish folklore tells of a trickster called Stingy Jack, who supposedly wandered the earth carrying a burning coal inside a hollowed-out turnip. This is where the name Jack-o'-lantern comes from!

🥕 6. Pumpkins weren't always the go-to
Before pumpkins became popular, people in Ireland and Scotland carved faces into turnips and other root vegetables. It was Irish and Scottish immigrants who helped popularise pumpkin carving in North America.

🍬 7. Trick or treat!
Trick-or-treating has roots in medieval traditions, when people went door-to-door offering prayers for the dead in exchange for food. The modern tradition really took off in America during the 20th century.

The Wakes Fair is back at Castle Donington!

Did you know, the Castle Donington Wakes has a history stretching back for nearly 750 years?

The very first official charter for the fair was granted in 1278 by King Edward I, which became a permanent fixture on the local calendar.

Over the centuries, the Wakes evolved from a gathering centered around trade, agriculture and hiring farm labourers and domestic servants into the fair we know today.

Whilst its roots lie in the village's agricultural past, the Wakes continues to bring people together for fun, entertainment, and some fairground magic! 🌟

🌟3 things you might not know about The Old Rectory ⛪

- The front of The Old Rectory still shows traces of the old window tax. Introduced in 1696, the tax encouraged people to block up windows to reduce their bills.
(Look closely and you can still see the painted-on window frames today!) 🎨

- Before becoming a workspace, The Old Rectory was home to the local rector and his household. To this day, many of our visitors reflect on the time they visited to register their wedding with the reverend! 💍

- During renovation work in the 1990s, workmen reportedly experienced strange equipment failures — and one even claimed to feel his shirt being tugged! Some suspect this to have been a supernatural event - spooky!👻

A building with a past... 🚔

The Old Police Station in Ashby de la Zouch has had quite a few lives.

Originally built in 1862 as a Victorian home, it was extended in 1879 to accommodate the police station, including a Magistrates' Room and accommodation for the local sergeant.

The building went on to house courtrooms, police officers and Ashby Town Council before the police station eventually closed in 2012.

In 2014, dbs gave the building a new lease of life with a £500,000 refurbishment, transforming it into the modern office space it is today.

We love that the building still has plenty of its history, while now being home to a completely different generation of local businesses.
