Everyone does Jacob’s Ladder. Fewer people know about the back way up Kinder Scout.

Fair Brook starts off the Snake Pass at Birchin Clough and follows the water uphill, past a run of little waterfalls, all the way to Fairbrook Naze. It’s a gritstone corner of the Kinder plateau at about 625m, where the rocks look like someone left a sculpture exhibition out in the weather.

Loop back along the northern edge and down Ashop Clough and you’re looking at roughly 8-9 miles. Long enough to earn a pint, short enough that you’ll still want one.

Fair warning: the last stretch is a proper scramble, and after heavy rain the brook crossings get interesting. On a misty day the view is mostly cloud, so pack layers and pick your weekend.

Hot take: Mondays are much better with a hot tub.

November at Greenacres is looking roomy, especially midweek. Funny how that works, because that’s where the deal is. Stay three nights, get the fourth free, and you don’t have to remember a code. It just comes off at checkout.

It sleeps 12 across 6 bedrooms, right on the edge of the Peak District with views across the valley to Lyme Park. There’s a games room for the competitive ones, a log burner for everyone else, and a hot tub that frankly does its best work when it’s cold out. Bring the dog too.

Disley’s pubs are a short wander away and there are walks on the doorstep, so a Tuesday has never looked so good. Annual leave was made for this. 🍂

Introducing Lookout Manor, where “shall we go out?” just means heading upstairs.

Up there, under vaulted ceilings, there’s a nightclub with proper club lighting and a smoke machine, a private cocktail bar, casino tables and retro arcade games. Downstairs, there’s a cinema room for the afternoon after.

It sleeps 20 across 7 bedrooms, right on the shore at Middleton Sands with Morecambe Bay out front 🌊 The garden has a hot tub, fire pit and stone pizza oven. The dining table seats all 20 at once, so nobody is left out.

Then there’s the leisure suite: a full-size indoor heated pool, sauna, gym and massage room. They’re yours from 4:30pm to 11:30pm every day, which happens to be exactly when you’d want them.

The walled garden is winding down for the year. The fire is just getting started.

We had English Countryside Living | Seasonal Storytelling to stay at The Carriage House, catching the last of the summer garden before settling into one of her favourite seasons. A dog-friendly stay, naturally.

Mornings started with pancakes in the kitchen 🥞, which is the only correct way to start a holiday. Then out for a walk. The Sandstone Trail is right on the doorstep and Beeston Castle is about 2 miles away, so there’s no shortage of walks. Or mud.

Afternoons were for pottering about the walled garden. It dates back to 1860, an Edward Kemp design, and it’s private and fully enclosed, which the dog cared about far more than the history. Then the fire went on, and that was the evening sorted.

Built in 1840 on the edge of Bunbury, the house sleeps 10 across five bedrooms and four bathrooms, with underfloor heating downstairs for cold feet after a long walk. Two award-winning pubs are within walking distance, and the hot tub’s there for anyone not quite ready to go in.

Fair warning: the zip wire is officially for the kids. No one has ever believed that.

Meet Ash Lodge, our newest home, on the edge of Stourpaine in North Dorset. It sleeps 10 across four king bedrooms, including a ground-floor suite with its own en suite (grandparents, this one has your name on it, stairs and bedtime negotiations optional).

The kitchen is where everyone will end up anyway: a huge island, a Falcon range cooker and glass doors straight out onto the terrace. In the garden there’s a hot tub, a wooded dell with that zip wire, and a heated pool in its own gated corner. Worth knowing, the pool’s open April to September, so the hot tub’s doing the heavy lifting until then.

Dogs are welcome, and The White Horse is in the village. It’s the pub, the restaurant, the shop and the post office, all in one building. Efficient lot, the people of Stourpaine. Hod Hill is walkable from the village if anyone wants to earn their pint first.

Swinfen Hall sleeps 30, which does rather remove the excuse for not inviting everyone.

Eleven bedrooms in private Staffordshire grounds, a golf simulator, arcade games, a private cinema and a stained-glass bar that feels like the right setting for at least one speech. Outside, there’s a heated pool, a hot tub and a tennis court. And yes, the dog can come.

Split 30 ways, it’s from £60 a head a night. We’ll leave that with you.

We’ve officially crossed the Solent. Meet Woodlands, our first home on the Isle of Wight 🌊

It’s in Bembridge and sleeps 8, or 12 with a bit of shuffling. There are two woodburners, a cedar hot tub and croquet on the lawn. The Old Village Inn is 0.1 miles away (handy or dangerous, depending on who you ask).

The dog’s invited too, and there’s a downstairs shower for sandy paws and sandier children.

Made for people who wait all year for autumn. 🍂

You know who you are. The big jumper’s been on standby since August, and the first night the log burner goes on is basically a bank holiday.

So welcome to hibernation mode. Book two nights at the weekend and the third is on us. Or book three midweek and we’ll add a fourth.

That extra night is the whole point. A slow morning is much easier when you’re not packing the car.

New photos of The Carriage House just landed 📸 It’s scrubbed up rather well for a 186-year-old.

On the edge of Bunbury village, it sleeps 10 across 5 bedrooms. There’s a Japanese bath hot tub, a log burner, underfloor heating downstairs, and a walled garden designed by Edward Kemp in 1860. It’s fully enclosed too, so the dogs can explore without anyone doing a headcount.

Two award-winning pubs are a short walk away, and the Sandstone Trail and Beeston Castle are right on the doorstep for anyone who insists on earning their Sunday roast.

Better still, there’s plenty of availability. No refreshing the calendar and hoping for a cancellation, just pick your dates and round up the usual suspects.
