Our owner Charles Lowther and his family lovingly restored the George and Dragon in 2008 and it’s now as beloved by locals as it is by visitors to the area. In every way, our roots are embedded deep in the rich history of our surrounding landscape and we’re proud to rear, forage and grow the majority of the ingredients you’ll s

Eat with us, stay the night - we have 10 bedrooms you can choose from… Each is different, individually designed with furniture and art from Charles’ family’s collection, but all have fabulous beds, lovely linens and en suite bathrooms.

Skip the kitchen; we have tables open for roasts this Sunday.

Expect a proper heap of roast meat of your choosing, crispy roast potatoes, and Yorkshire puddings the size of saucers. We serve it all with tender veg and a generous pour of gravy.

Not keen on meat? No worries. We keep a selection of veggie and seafood options running alongside the main roasts.

Everything on your plate comes straight from local farms in the Eden Valley and the Lake District, plus the kitchen gardens at Askham Hall. It’s a flavour-packed meal made from ingredients that haven’t travelled far from free-range fields.

Dine with us this summer 🍴

Over the course of the summer, we're lucky to be harvesting our own produce, grown at Askham Hall, as well as receiving fresh deliveries of meat from our estate farms and seafood, caught by our brilliant local suppliers.

We have lots to offer, from hearty veggie dishes to sumptuous melt-in-the-mouth shorthorn steaks and burgers, refreshing salads and sweet indulgent desserts.

Sunday Roasts! 🍖

Take a rest from the cooking this Sunday or the next, we've got tables available for both weekends.

We offer a generous portion of roast meat, crispy roast potatoes, giant Yorkshire puddings, alongside carefully prepared vegetables, served with a boatload of gravy.
For those who don't fancy meat, we always maintain a couple of different veggie and seafood dishes on the menu alongside our roasts.

All of our ingredients for roast dinners come from our own local farms in the Eden Valley and the Lake District, as well as the kitchen gardens at Askham Hall.

Did you know some of our rooms are dog-friendly? 🐕

We absolutely love to welcome your four-legged companions to the George and Dragon Clifton!

While we do need to keep a couple of our bedrooms, the restaurant and kitchen as dog-free areas (for obvious reasons! 🍖), we're very happy for your furry friends to join you in many parts of our establishment.

If you'd like to dine with your dog, simply let us know when you book, and we'll make sure to find the perfect table for you in our reception and bar area. After all, why should your four-legged family member miss out on the fun?

Head Chef Paul is in his element today, meticulously deboning fresh salmon sides for this evening's service.

We'll be serving this beautifully delicate fish alongside buttery new potatoes and a vibrant selection of homegrown vegetables, harvested straight from our very own kitchen gardens at Askham Hall.
