Planning a farm stay in Scotland? Here are a few things guests often tell us they hadn’t thought about before arriving!
🚜 Farm life starts early
The farm doesn’t run to office hours. Depending on the season, you may hear the tractor out before breakfast, or see work underway during the day. With animals to care for and jobs that depend on the weather, there’s always something happening.
🐿️ The views come with wildlife
One of the joys of staying in the countryside is sharing it with the local wildlife. Keep an eye out for swans, hares, deer, birds of prey and if you’re lucky, even a red squirrel or otter.
🌦️ The weather can change quickly
Scotland is known to experience all 4 seasons in one day! Layers, waterproofs are useful whatever the season. Morning dew, muddy fields and farm tracks are all part of the countryside experience. Comfortable, sturdy footwear that doesn’t mind an adventure is always worth packing.
🎶 It sounds different here
Instead of traffic and sirens, you’ll hear sheep in the fields, birds singing, dogs playing and the occasional tractor or mower busy at work.
🚗 Farm roads aren’t the same as normal roads
Our farm tracks are surfaced with stone aggregate, and are shared with farm vehicles, walkers and sometimes the sheep. Taking it slowly helps protect both your vehicle and everyone using the tracks.
🔦 A torch can come in handy
Away from streetlights, the countryside gets wonderfully dark in the colder months. Perfect for stargazing, and a torch is always useful if you’re heading out after sunset.
📶 Mobile signal can be patchy in places
Some networks perform better than others in rural areas, so downloading maps or directions before travelling can be helpful.
