Airbnb's new cleaning rules start on 20 November. Here's the short version 👇
Hosts can no longer turn checkout into a cleaning shift.
❌ You CAN'T ask guests to:
• Wash and put away dishes
• Strip the beds or start a wash
• Take rubbish off-site
• Avoid an amenity you advertise (like the air con)
✅ You CAN still ask guests to:
• Put dishes in the sink
• Gather used towels
• Sort rubbish and recycling into indoor bins
• Turn off the air con when they leave
Other changes to know:
• Every rule must sit in the "House rules and requests" section of your listing
• No extra rules in messages, welcome books or signs on the fridge
• Break the policy and guests may see "includes cleaning requests" on your listing
• Exceptions are possible for genuine local or safety reasons (think bear-proof bins)
Guests love it. Hosts, not so much.
The bigger lesson? A platform can change what you're allowed to ask of guests in your own home, with a month's notice.
On your own direct booking website, you set the rules.
