We headed out today with a Community Carvery for a lovely lady in the village who’s recovering from an operation.
Her daughter had nominated her, and she was absolutely made up when we arrived.
During our conversation at the door she was curious and asked us, “Who’s paid for this?”
Our Community Carveries aren’t really about money. They’re made from good food we have left at the end of our carvery service, which we’d much rather see go to someone in our community than go to waste, but her question was rather fitting today because, as it happens, for the second time in two weeks, somebody actually had paid for hers... Last Sunday, a lady came in for a carvery with her family and, when it came time to pay, told us she’d seen what we were doing with the Community Carveries and asked us to add another one to her bill for somebody else. She didn’t know who would receive it and asked to remain anonymous. She simply wanted to do something kind for someone else.
So today we got to tell our lady that, while we couldn’t tell her who, someone in her community had paid for her carvery. One person nominated someone they love. Another quietly paid for a stranger’s carvery. And today, those two acts of kindness came together.
Afterwards, We headed off for a walk around Silverdale Country Park in the Sunday sunshine, with just our shadows for company. Perhaps quite fitting really. You don’t always have to see the people behind a kind gesture to know they’re there.
