Tam o' Shanter only meant to stay for one🥃
But as Robert Burns famously told it, one drink turned into a rather eventful journey home...
Involving a stormy night, witches dancing at Alloway Kirk, the devil playing the pipes and a desperate escape across the Brig o' Doon. Tam made it home in one piece. His poor grey mare Meg wasn't quite so lucky with her tail!
And Burns knew a thing or two about Halloween. He even dedicated an entire poem to Ayrshire's old traditions, from burning nuts to predict romance to pulling kail stalks to discover who you might marry 🪶
Long before pumpkins, Scotland had turnip lanterns, guising and dooking for apples. We've always taken Halloween seriously around here.
At the Dumfries Arms, our own history stretches back to 1717, when the hotel began life as a coaching inn. With Robert Burns among its notable former guests, so a ghost appearing behind our bar tonight feels rather fitting 👻
Happy Halloween, stay for one tonight, but we won't say a word if it turns into three!
