The wee pub that steals everyone's heart! 💚

Mary McBride's in Cushendun - once known as one of the smallest pubs in Ireland.

The original, historic public area of the bar was exceptionally tiny, measuring just 5 feet x 9 feet 6 inches. Because it was essentially the size of a large closet, it had no room for tables or chairs, featuring only a basic counter, simple shelving, and a small wall bench. While the original tiny bar is still preserved with all of its original features, the property has expanded somewhat over the years.

The legendary landlady, Mary McBride, officially took over the licence and operations of the Cushendun premises from her mother in 1951, which is when her name was proudly painted above the door. Her family had owned the bar from the 1860’s when it was first licenced.

Mary was famous for never drinking alcohol herself. Local lore notes that she strictly refused to serve women in the front of the tiny bar; instead, female patrons were invited through a side door directly into her personal kitchen to enjoy a drink and exchange local gossip. Mary McBride passed away in 1982.

Inside the modern section of the pub, you can see Door 8, one of the ten intricately carved wooden doors on the Game of Thrones territory trail. The doors were crafted from the fallen beech trees of the nearby Dark Hedges.

A National Trust village, a pint of Guinness, and a story or two. Does it get any better than that?
