Dornie from the water 🫶🏻 There’s something pretty special about seeing our wee village from a different perspective. A Sunday afternoon out on the water, with Eilean Donan Castle, the mountains and Dornie looking beautiful as always ⛵️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

One of the many reasons we are so lucky to call this place home❤️

📍 Francis Street, Dornie
📸 Photograph by Duncan MacPherson

Nestled at the meeting point of Loch Long and Loch Duich, Dornie was originally known by its Gaelic name, Bundalloch. The village was laid out in 1794 by the British Fisheries Society as a fishing and trading station on land belonging to Colonel Francis Humberston Mackenzie of Seaforth.

By the 19th century, Dornie was a thriving community, with many residents involved in the herring industry, as well as boat building, net making and shoemaking. The village remained a busy hub until the construction of the bridge over Loch Long in April 1940, which bypassed the main street.

Look closely and you can just make out the silhouette of Eilean Donan Castle to the right of the central tree in the background. As the castle was restored and rebuilt between 1919 and 1932, this detail helps date the photograph to sometime after 1932.

Days like these… 💙

A wonderful day on the water exploring Loch Duich & Loch Long from Dornie to Glenelg and Isleornsay before heading home past the magnificent Eilean Donan Castle.

The highlight of the day was the pod of dolphins playing in Glenelg Bay 🐬
