Winsford Hill | A path mown through the green.

A track curves through young barley on the slopes near Winsford Hill, rising towards a hedge-line and the open sky. Follow it far enough and the farmland gives way to moor, ponies and hundred-mile views.

June is the month these field paths are at their best — the crop tall enough to brush your hands through, skylarks overhead, and the hedgerows still fresh. It's quiet, ordinary, working countryside, which is exactly what makes it special.

Footpaths thread this whole corner of Exmoor together, linking villages, river valleys and high common. You could walk a different one every day for a fortnight.

Winsford Hill | The land in full summer flow.

From the slopes of Winsford Hill the countryside rolls away in great green waves — sheep-cropped pasture, deep wooded combes, and field after field stacked up to the skyline.

This is the view that stops walkers mid-stride. The hill itself is open common, grazed by Exmoor ponies and crossed by ancient tracks, and from the top the whole of south Exmoor seems to spread out at your feet. In June the greens are at their richest, before the summer sun has had a chance to tire them.

No filter needed, no crowds expected. Just the moor doing what it does best.

Wistlandpound Reservoir | Still water on the edge of the moor.

Green shores, quiet water and a wide summer sky at Wistlandpound Reservoir, tucked into the countryside where Exmoor slips down towards the North Devon coast.
