We are a board game holiday cottage located in the peaceful surroundings of Irongray, Dumfries UK.

We offer a Unique Escape Room experience and Geek Retreat / Board Game Packages. Near to 7 Stanes trails for Mountain Biking & beautiful countryside walks We are Hester and Paul, the proud owners of Arden Holiday Cottage since 2019 and we are hoping to meet lots of new faces. The cottage has been refurbished and decorated throughout, ready to make our cottage your favourite bolt hole for some stress-free time and happy memories. Hester likes to spend time with the horses and enjoys finding ways to help people improve their mental health through meditation, Reiki and spending time in nature. We will be offering Relax and Chill Breaks during the year for those who just need space to reboot. We don’t watch TV much and would much rather play board games and find challenging Escape Rooms to break out of. There is a games cupboard here at the cottage with lots of family favourites such as Monopoly, Yahtzee and many others. For more serious gamers, then we offer the Geek Retreat, Leisurely Legacy, Carry on Campaigning and Boardgame Bonanza.

We may be deep in the heart of spooky season right now but our Escape Room can be enjoyed any time of the year. Our immersive experience with the Portencorkrie Fairies combines the rich history and fascinating folklore of Irongray, Dumfries & Galloway and the hills and glens of Scotland herself making it educational as well as entertaining.

And for our younger guests who may find the Frightful Fairies too scary, we have an experience suitable for 6-10 year olds. Escape to a world of Magic and Scorcery where you solve the clues to save the day!

A new game for our collection. We really enjoyed Tenby – it has plenty of variety and gives you lots to think about without ever feeling overwhelming.

For us, it feels like a real step on from games such as Streets, with even more things to watch, plan for and consider as you make your decisions. The artwork is full of charm and personality, and the components feel really well made, sturdy and satisfying to use.

It’s a lovely game to look at, but more importantly, there’s enough going on beneath the surface to keep us wanting to play again. Book a stay with us and you can discover it for yourself.

Switch Off and Slow Down.

Arden Holiday Cottage is a rural escape, and part of our whole ethos is giving guests the chance to switch off from the online world and reconnect with each other and with nature.

One consequence of our countryside location is that our Wi-Fi can be very slow, intermittent and occasionally unavailable altogether. We provide internet access where we can, but we cannot guarantee either its speed or availability. If the external service goes down, unfortunately it is outside our control and not something we are able to fix ourselves.

For us, though, switching off is part of the appeal. Swap streaming for one of our many DVDs, choose a game from the games cupboard, head outside, watch the wildlife, enjoy our dark skies or simply spend some time together without the constant pull of phones and social media.

If reliable Wi-Fi is essential to your holiday, Arden Cottage will not be the right choice for you. Please book on the understanding that internet access cannot be guaranteed and that refunds or compensation cannot be given because Wi-Fi is slow, intermittent or unavailable.

Come to Arden to disconnect from Wi-Fi and reconnect with everything else.

The South of Scotland Dark Sky Festival runs from the 9th to the 18th October 2026 and celebrates the start of dark sky season in Dumfries & Galloway and the Scottish Borders. Across the region, events are held to showcase and celebrate the local dark skies. We're ideally situated to take advantage of the dark skies here!

Who needs a lawnmower? Our cheeky pony Saffy thought she would help out by escaping into the cottage garden and giving it a nibble! Luckily she only has small feet so no large hoof prints!

It’s been fantastic recently to see all the baby swallows & house martins practising their flying - their parents hard work coming to fruition. A beautiful sight against the blue skies.

We visited our favourite gaming cafe recently - The Treehouse in Sheffield and played some games. We really enjoyed these two games and bought them for our boardgaming bonanza package. We look forward to sharing more pics and details about them. It's a great way to spend a rainy Sunday afternoon in Scotland!
