Have you ever held a beautiful notebook and wondered whose hands made it?
There is something so special about a handmade book.

The paper, the cover, the stitching, the patience behind it — all coming together to create something personal, useful and beautiful.

Today, we are delighted to introduce Jane Hardstaff, the second tutor joining us for our Heritage Craft Escape at Yarn Market Hotel.

Jane is our Bookbinding tutor, and her story with this traditional craft began ten years ago, after a lifetime of enjoying many different creative practices.

When she discovered bookbinding, she was immediately hooked.

Since then, Jane has gained a City & Guilds Diploma in Bookbinding with Distinction and has become an active member of the Society of Bookbinders.

She now creates handcrafted notebooks, journals and albums, selling them through a local craft gallery and selected craft fairs.

She also undertakes bespoke commissions, creating pieces that are made with care, skill and attention to detail.

But what makes Jane’s work even more special is her passion for sharing this craft with others.

She runs workshops and particularly enjoys introducing complete beginners to the joy of bookbinding — proving that you do not need to be an expert to experience the satisfaction of making something beautiful with your own hands.

During our Heritage Craft Escape, Jane will guide guests through the process of creating their very own traditional hardback notebook, choosing from a selection of beautiful decorative papers.

Guests will also learn core bookbinding techniques that they can continue using at home, with time to explore different types of handmade books in a relaxed, friendly and inspiring atmosphere.

We are truly honoured to welcome Jane to Yarn Market Hotel and to celebrate a craft that turns simple materials into something meaningful.

Who is your best friend?

Mine is definitely Bruce.

I had such a lovely weekend at Yarn Market Hotel. After checking in and saying hello to my friend Bruce — see the photos below — I decided to do my usual little tour around the local shops in Dunster.

My first stop is always Home Coming.

For us at the hotel, caring about other local businesses is not just something we say. It is part of our ethos. Dunster is full of independent shops, local stories and people who put so much heart into what they do, and we believe in supporting each other whenever we can.

After that, I was ready for a weekend of shooting content, catching up on admin, and having a few meetings with my Yarn Market Hotel team.

A weekend with Bruce, Dunster, local shops and a bit of behind-the-scenes hotel life. Not a bad way to spend a few days.

What makes a hotel different?

I often ask myself this question. What is that one thing that makes Yarn Market Hotel more than just a place to stay?

And for me, the answer is simple.

It is our team’s desire to make an impact in the community.

To support others. To show up. To be part of local life. To help promote the people, places, events and stories that make this area so special.

Today, part of the Yarn Market Hotel team visited Stogumber Village for the annual Open Gardens event. And what a beautiful day it was.

The gardens were lovely, of course. But what stayed with us most were the conversations.

The local people we met.
The stories we heard.
The small moments that remind us why community matters so much.

For us, the hotel is not only about us as a business. It is about supporting each other, supporting local initiatives, and cherishing the area we are lucky to be part of.

Days like today remind us that hospitality does not stop at the hotel door.

Some people do not just teach a craft.
They carry history, patience and a lifetime of learning in their hands.

Meet Pam Martin, our Passementerie tutor for the Heritage Craft Escape at Yarn Market Hotel.

Pam is a lifelong explorer of textiles and history, as well as an experienced educator. Her early inspiration came from her grandmother, Emily, and over time her love of traditional textile work has grown into a deep interest in natural materials, sustainable making and heritage skills.

For the past 10 years, Pam has taught a wide range of textile techniques from her Somerset Levels studio and beyond. She has exhibited during Somerset Arts Weeks and at other independent festivals and exhibitions, written numerous magazine articles, and holds both a Postgraduate degree and a Master’s Degree in Adult Education.

During the Heritage Craft Escape, Pam will introduce guests to the beautiful world of passementerie, teaching basic skills including button, braid, tassel and rosette making.

These traditional techniques are satisfying to learn in their own right, but they can also be used as decorations alongside many other crafts.

Pam is also the main organiser behind this special creative collaboration, and we are truly honoured to host her and the wonderful tutors joining her at Yarn Market Hotel.

They are about slowing down, learning with your hands, and remembering the quiet joy of creating something from scratch.

This October, Yarn Market Hotel is honoured to host a very special Heritage Craft Escape in the heart of Dunster, Exmoor.

From Monday 19th to Friday 23rd October 2026, guests will enjoy a four-night creative autumn break, guided by three talented tutors and surrounded by the charm of one of Somerset’s most beautiful medieval villages.
