There’s something rather special about spending an evening under the stars in Exmoor. ✨

Earlier this month, we welcomed guests to our Dark Skies Stargazing Weekend, and what a lovely weekend it was!

Away from the bright lights of towns and cities, Exmoor offers some wonderful opportunities to discover the night sky. It’s one of those experiences that reminds us just how beautiful nature can be, even after the sun goes down.

If you missed our October weekend, we have good news! Our next Dark Skies Stargazing Weekend takes place from 5th to 7th February 2027, including a visit to the Norman Lockyer Observatory on Saturday evening.

Happy Exmoor Day! Today, 19th October, we’re celebrating a place we’re incredibly lucky to call home.

On this day in 1954, Exmoor officially became a National Park. 72 years later, there is still so much to love and celebrate.

From the ponies wandering across the moorland to the beautiful villages, ancient woodlands, breathtaking coastal views and wonderfully dark skies, Exmoor has a little something for everyone.

But what makes Exmoor truly special isn’t just its scenery. It’s the people, the communities, the local businesses and the generations who have cared for this remarkable part of Britain.

Here at Yarn Market Hotel, in the heart of Dunster, we have the pleasure of welcoming visitors who come to discover Exmoor, and many who return year after year.

Exmoor’s dark skies are getting a little extra attention today!

This weekend’s stargazing break is fully booked, but if you missed out, there’s good news. We still have places available for our next break, taking place from Friday 5th to Sunday 7th February 2027.

Join us for a wonderful weekend discovering the beauty of Exmoor after dark, with expert talks from local astronomy enthusiast Terry Evans and a special Saturday evening visit to the Norman Lockyer Observatory.

Whether you’re already fascinated by astronomy or simply curious about what’s happening above our heads, this is a lovely opportunity to learn something new and enjoy a few days in Dunster.

£250 per person, including two nights’ accommodation, dinner, breakfast, lunches and the organised activities.

There are some moments on Exmoor that make you forget about everything else for a little while.

And quite often, they involve our wonderful Exmoor ponies.

Perhaps it’s the sight of one grazing peacefully on the moor, or a little family wandering together across the hills. Nothing extraordinary to them, of course, but something rather special to those of us lucky enough to witness it.

We often talk about Exmoor’s beautiful landscapes, its walking trails and its charming villages. But these ponies are part of what gives this place its heart.

They remind us that sometimes the loveliest moments are the simplest ones. That slowing down, looking around and appreciating the world in front of us can be more than enough.

Here at the Yarn Market Hotel, we never tire of seeing them. And we hope our guests never do either.

Fancy swapping your usual routine for a few days of creativity, good company and a little autumn magic in Exmoor?

From 19th to 23rd October, we’re welcoming guests to Yarn Market Hotel in Dunster for four nights dedicated to traditional crafts, learning new skills and enjoying some well deserved relaxation.

You’ll have the opportunity to explore three wonderful heritage crafts with experienced tutors:

• Quilling with Philippa Reid
• Bookbinding with Jane Hardstaff
• Passementerie with Pam Martin

No need to be an expert. Whether you’re discovering these crafts for the first time or looking to develop your skills, there’s something rather lovely about sitting down, getting creative and making something with your own hands.

Your break includes four nights’ accommodation, dinner, breakfast, light lunches, tuition and basic materials.

A little kindness can make more difference than we realise.

Today, 10th October, is World Mental Health Day, an opportunity to remind ourselves that looking after our mental wellbeing matters just as much as looking after our physical health.

Here at the Yarn Market Hotel, surrounded by the beautiful countryside of Exmoor, we often talk about the pleasure of slowing down, enjoying nature and spending time with good company.

But we also recognise that life isn’t always easy, and that not every struggle is visible.

A peaceful walk, a friendly conversation or simply having someone who listens can make a difficult day a little easier. And sometimes, we need more than that, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with asking for support.

Today, we encourage you to check in with someone, make time for yourself and remember that kindness costs nothing.
