So sorry to hear of the passing of David Hockney at the age of 88.

David Hockney was one of Britain's most celebrated and influential contemporary artists. Born in Bradford, England, in 1937, he became a leading figure in the Pop Art movement during the 1960s. Renowned for his bold use of colour, innovative techniques and distinctive visual style, Hockney has worked across painting, drawing, photography, printmaking and digital media.

His most famous works include vibrant depictions of California swimming pools, sun-drenched landscapes and intimate portraits. After moving to Los Angeles in the 1960s, he developed a unique artistic language that captured the light, space and lifestyle of Southern California. Later in his career, he returned to Yorkshire, producing large-scale landscapes inspired by the English countryside.

Hockney has continually embraced new technology, creating artwork on computers, tablets and smartphones. His ability to reinvent himself while remaining instantly recognisable has secured his place as one of the most important and widely admired artists of the modern era. His art and his contribution to the art world will be greatly missed.

David Hockney RIP

I am excited at the thought that our railway service is now in the hands of Great British Railways (GBR) which took over ownership of the Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) franchise which includes Southern, Thameslink, Great Northern and Gatwick Express. We have been promised a doubling of the frequency of Gatwick Express services between London Victoria and Gatwick Airport from December, and more early morning services on Saturdays and Mondays from this summer. Nothing yet on how we will benefit in Eastbourne, but I am watching and I will be reporting.

In the meantime, I am working on two documentary tourist guides for Eastbourne. The first one covers the town and the second one is focused on the surrounding area including Pevensey Castle, Sovereign Harbour, Beachy Head & Seven Sisters Litlington White Horse, Alfriston, Berwick Church and the Long Man of Wilmington ......... is there anywhere else I should consider?

Here is an interesting article from MSN suggesting that Brits are useless when it comes to identifying famous UK landmarks. The article suggests that in a poll of 2,000 adults, 59% struggled to name well-known sites across the country including the Angel of The North and the White Cliffs of Dover.

In order to avoid any possible confusion or misunderstanding can I just point out that the picture which accompanies the article is a picture of our very own Beachy Head which should certainly not be confused with the White Cliffs of Dover (which are not even white unlike our beautiful cliffs).

Most of us could recognise the Statue of Liberty in New York, 36% weren’t able to name iconic landmarks closer to home, such as Hadrian’s Wall or St Paul’s Cathedral
