There are days when I look around me and think, how lucky are we to live somewhere so beautiful?

Autumn in the Peak District is one of those times.

The trees turn the most incredible shades of gold, copper and red, the air feels fresh and crisp, and even the simplest walk can make you feel wonderful.

And sometimes, you just have to throw your arms in the air and enjoy it all!

It's moments like these that remind me why we moved to this beautiful corner of the Peak District, and why I love sharing it with our guests at Top Riley.

Because a stay here isn't just about a beautiful cottage.

It's about stepping outside, discovering somewhere new, feeling the seasons change and enjoying those little moments that everyday life doesn't always leave room for.

Imagine sitting quietly with your morning coffee, looking out across the countryside, when you notice movement in the neighbouring fields.

A deer wandering through the grass. Perhaps a stag standing perfectly still, watching the world around him.

For a few moments, everything else seems to disappear.

These are the little experiences that make staying at Top Riley so memorable.

Our secluded Barn is surrounded by beautiful countryside, where nature carries on with its day just beyond your window.

There are wonderful places to explore nearby, from Chatsworth House to the historic village of Eyam, but sometimes the loveliest moments happen when you simply stay where you are.

There are moments when nature really does take your breath away.

And right now, Pretty Wood at Top Riley is looking absolutely beautiful.

The trees have turned the most wonderful shades of gold, copper and russet, while a carpet of fallen leaves covers the woodland floor.

It's one of my favourite times of year here.

There's something so peaceful about wandering beneath the trees, listening to the gentle rustle of leaves underfoot and watching the last of the autumn sunshine filter through the branches.

No crowds. No noise. Just you, the woodland and the beauty of the changing seasons.

And the lovely thing? Our guests don't have to travel anywhere to experience it.

Pretty Wood is right here at Top Riley, waiting to be explored whenever the mood takes you.

Perhaps a morning wander with a cup of coffee, a peaceful afternoon watching the wildlife or simply a few moments standing still and taking it all in.

There’s something about Haddon Hall at Christmas that feels quite different.

You arrive through the old stone entrance, step into the courtyard, and suddenly the day slows down.

The market winds through the historic rooms and spaces of the Hall, filled with independent makers, thoughtful gifts and the kind of things you want to stop and look at properly.

No rushing from shop to shop.

Just time to wander, choose something special, stop for something warm and enjoy being somewhere that already feels full of history before the Christmas decorations are even added.

That’s what makes Haddon so lovely at this time of year.

It feels less like “doing the Christmas shopping” and more like making a day of it.

And afterwards, you can head back through the Peak District to Top Riley, put your feet up, and enjoy the quiet again.

Sometimes, the loveliest moments are the ones you weren't looking for.

Out walking today, I stumbled across this beautiful little scene, tucked away amongst the fallen leaves and grasses.

It stopped me in my tracks. Just a little reminder of how magical nature can be when you take the time to notice it.

One of the things I love most about living here is that even a familiar woodland walk can hold a lovely surprise.

Sometimes, all you need to do is slow down and look around. 🍂

A Little Life, A Lot of Charm: Beautiful Bakewell

Just a short drive from Top Riley lies the lovely village of Bakewell, full of gentle bustle and timeless charm. Think cobbled lanes, independent shops, and that unmistakable feeling of stepping into a slower, simpler world.

Pop in for a wander, treat yourself to proper fish and chips, and take a seat by the river to watch the ducks and the fish darting beneath the surface.

There’s something delightfully old-fashioned about it all… and we think you’ll love it.

And yes, the Bakewell Pudding is worth every bite. 😉
