A wee Sunday walk around The Kelpies today and it was great to see just how many tourists are actually visiting Falkirk.
Cars queuing to get in. Coaches arriving full of visitors. The Kelpies busy with people from who knows how many different countries.
Then we give them the warm Falkirk welcome…
Queue to get in. Pay to park. Visit The Kelpies. Buy something to eat or drink. Then leave.
Meanwhile, just a short distance away, Falkirk town centre could desperately do with some of these hundreds — probably thousands over a busy weekend — of visitors.
Where is the big “VISITING THE KELPIES? COME AND DISCOVER FALKIRK TOWN CENTRE” sign?
Where is the obvious information telling tourists about Falkirk’s history, shops, cafés, pubs, restaurants and other things to see?
Where’s the easy shuttle, visitor trail or incentive to leave the car at The Kelpies and spend a couple of hours in the town?
We have achieved the difficult bit. The tourists are already here.
They’re literally queuing up to visit Falkirk.
Perhaps one day we’ll think of inviting them into the town as well.
Now that really would be revolutionary tourism thinking.

Falkirk contrasted
Same town, same day. Queues at the Kelpies, silence in the town centre. We don’t have a tourism problem, we have a connection problem. Visitors come, spend, and leave, while local shops see none of it.
