Findochty Holiday Cottage - No. 4 Duke Street A two bedroom fisherman's cottage in the picturesque village of Findochty, on the north east coast of Scotland

This cosy 2 bedroom fisherman’s cottage is a stone’s throw from a small, secluded sandy beach, a short walk from a larger sandy beach and within easy walking distance of the harbour. The dolphins are frequent visitors to this area of coastline and are regularly seen during the summer months.

A visit to the cafe at the fabulous art deco Friends Of Tarlair swimming pool over the weekend. Just along from Macduff, it’s about 30 minutes drive from Findochty.

Tasty food and amazing scones, and with great views from the roof top, it’s definitely worth a visit!

Make sure you check out the old black and white photos in the cafe of the swimming pool in its hey day.

Imagine if you could step back in time over 100 years...
The small beach by the cottage, The Crooked Hythe, was once a bustling shipyard, with wooden steam drifters as tall as the houses, being built and repaired.

In 1900, Thomas Mackenzie, a ships carpenter from Dumbarton, whilst on holiday in Findochty, realised the Crooked Hythe would be a perfect place to build boats.
He returned in 1903, with two family members and began the back-breaking work to construct a slipway. By the end of 1903 the slipway was complete and W & J Herd & Mackenzie shipyard was ready for business.

The first order to build a steam drifter came in 1905. The boat builders worked out in the open air, with no shelter from the elements. This first boat was named Bloomfield (BF218) and cost £915 to make. She was completed and launched in early 1906. After this success the orders flowed in regularly and the shipyard made on average three boats a year.

This is the oldest photo we’ve seen where you can just about see the cottage. It’s dated around 1908, and according to the valuation roll of 1906-07, the cottage is listed as;
141 Findochty, House & Shop, David Flett ‘Dodie’, merchant.

Street names weren’t introduced in Findochty until 1920, and houses were just known by a number.

We love finding out about the history of the village and seeing the old photos- not much has changed!

Fit’s this aa aboot en?
(What’s this all about then?)

If you’ve visited Findochty, you might have noticed that some folk speak a very different dialect to the rest of the UK.

It’s called Doric – the dialect of Scots spoken across the north-east of Scotland. And trust us, it can take a bit of getting used to!

Here are a few favourites:
Loon – boy
Quine – girl
Mannie – man
Wifie – woman
Aabody – everyone
Aathin - everything
Muckle – big
Morn – tomorrow
Morn’s morn – tomorrow morning

And just to keep you on your toes, the words can even change from town to town. In Peterhead, a seagull is a pyool. In Aberdeen, it’s a scurry. In Buckie? It’s a gow.

You’ll hear Doric everywhere - from the wifies chatting in the village to over the tannoy in Tesco.

When we moved here from Oxford 20 years ago, we really struggled to understand the locals. Thankfully we’ve got much better since then, and even find ourselves using the odd Doric word now and again.

Our welcome note in the cottage is even written in Doric by Alison from Doric Ditties.

So... div ye ken ony Doric? Share your favourite word below! 👇

Golf clubs galore!

Even I was surprised when I totted up how many golf courses are within an hour’s drive of Findochty... 23!

Twenty-three courses in 60 minutes – that’s bonkers! You could stay with us for three weeks, play every day, and still not tick them all off.

Moray is a lesser-known golfing paradise, with green fees starting from just £20. Play a traditional links course one day, a heathland course the next, and a parkland course after that.

Our cottage makes the perfect base, with a secure outbuilding for storing your golf clubs and charging trolleys at the end of the day. And when you’re not on the course, there’s plenty to see and do nearby – or simply slow down, switch off and enjoy the slower pace of life by the sea.

Download our Moray Golf Guide for everything you need to plan your golf holiday, including drive times, green fees and details on all 23 courses.
