They roam freely across 35,000 acres, so encounters happen. Keep 50 metres away. Don't feed them, even if they seem friendly. Take photos from a distance instead.

If a pony looks injured or distressed, contact the New Forest National Park authority. Otherwise, just enjoy watching them graze. They're part of what makes this place magical.

Forget marked paths for a moment. Locals use the open forest itself—it's common land, and you can wander freely across heathland and woodland. Pick a distant tree or landmark and head toward it. You'll find streams, glades, and quiet spots tourists miss entirely.

Just respect the grazing animals and leave gates as you find them. The forest rewards curiosity.
