Fancy a September coastal break with world-class sport on your doorstep?

🌊 September on Portland is going to be pretty special…

From 7–12 September 2026, Weymouth & Portland will host the IQFOiL Class World Championships, welcoming around 250 of the world’s top Olympic athletes to our coastline.

It’s set to be an incredible week of high-speed racing, atmosphere and excitement on the water, and a brilliant time to visit the island.

We currently have availability at Our Place in Portland, including stays during and after the event:

How many Portland landmarks can you identify without zooming in? 👀

We’ve recently added this beautiful illustrated map of Portland by local artist Ellie Newbury Art to Our Place in Portland.

One of the things we love about hosting is helping guests discover the places that make Portland so special, and this artwork is packed with local landmarks, wildlife and hidden gems from across the island.

From Church Ope Cove and Rufus Castle to Portland Bill and Chesil Beach, there are so many familiar places to spot.

We’re delighted to support another local creative and showcase Ellie’s wonderful work in the cottage.

♻️ Today is World Refill Day ♻️

One of the small changes we've made at Our Place in Portland is using refillable Wild England toiletries in reusable glass bottles.

Between guest stays, one of the many behind-the-scenes jobs is topping them up ready for the next arrival. It might seem like a small thing, but choosing refill over single-use helps reduce waste and means fewer plastic bottles heading for landfill.

Sustainability isn't always about big gestures. Often it's the little things done consistently.

Sometimes it’s the little things…

Today I collected some leftover wool from the wonderfully talented Elizabeth at Ewenique Furniture here on Portland.

Natural wool can be used by birds to help line their nests, so we’ve added a wool feeder to the garden at Our Place in Portland. It’s a simple way to reduce waste, support another local small business and hopefully give our feathered visitors a helping hand.

These small touches are part of what we love about hosting, creating a place that’s kind to both our community and the environment. 🐦

🌿 A little milestone for Our Place in Portland 🌿

I’m really pleased to share that we’ve been awarded the Green Tourism Bronze Award.

Since opening our Victorian cottage, I’ve tried to make thoughtful choices that are better for our guests and our local community. From supporting local businesses and reducing waste, to using refillable products and encouraging guests to explore Portland and the Jurassic Coast sustainably, every small step adds up.

What I particularly like about Green Tourism is that it’s an independent assessment, recognising not just where you are now, but your commitment to keep improving.

This is just the beginning of the journey and I’m already looking ahead to the next level.

A huge thank you to everyone who has supported our little cottage and the local businesses that help make it special. 💚

Our award-winning Victorian cottage, Our Place in Portland Holiday Home, on Portland sleeps up to 6, welcomes up to two dogs, and is just moments from the South West Coast Path and Jurassic Coast. With sea views, an enclosed garden and plenty of thoughtful touches, it's a lovely base for exploring Dorset.

🪣 What do all these beach toys have in common?

Many of them were left behind on local beaches.

Each year, countless plastic buckets, spades and toys are abandoned after a day by the sea. If they’re not collected, they can become litter and eventually break down into smaller fragments that may harm our marine environment.

That’s why we’re delighted to be taking part in a pilot project with Weymouth & Portland Marine Litter Project.

The toys in our new ‘Borrow Bucket’ have been collected from local beaches, cleaned, sorted and given a second life for guests to enjoy during their stay.

Instead of buying new toys for a few days at the beach, guests can simply borrow what they need and return it for the next family to enjoy.

It’s a simple idea, but one that helps:

🌊 Reduce waste
🌊 Encourage reuse
🌊 Keep beaches cleaner
🌊 Create happy holiday memories

We’re proud to support this local initiative and would like to say a huge thank you to Weymouth & Portland Marine Litter Project for including us in the trial.
