Yesterday we wandered off on another little road trip from the stopover (Greg on the hunt of a FB marketplace bargain 🙄) and visited Dufftown.

On our own van adventures back in 2019/2020 we didn’t make it there, as we encountered a road closure on the road from Craigellachie. This time we had better luck.

We were just in time for lunch so popped into the The Coffee Pot-Dufftown for broth and a panini, then had a walk through the town. There is a station, linking the 11 miles from Dufftown to Keith on the restored heritage railway. We’ll have to ride on that one day.

Overlooking the town centre is a granite clock tower, built in 1839, originally as a gaol.

I spotted this plaque on the tower too. Mary Symon was a poet born in Dufftown in 1863, well known for her poems about the impact of the First World War. Having studied war poetry for literature exams back in the eighties, it’s a shame none of hers were included.

“Gie me a hill wi’ the heather on’t,
An’ a reid sun drappin’ doon,
Or the mists o’ the mornin’ risin’ saft
Wi’ the reek owre a wee grey toon.”

- ‘The Soldiers’ Cairn’, Mary Symon

We’re very happy to take bookings and reserve a space for you, and we don’t ask for payment up front on booking ☺️

What we do ask please is if you’ve booked, should your plans change (illness, family, vehicle issues, traffic, weather etc.) just let us know, we understand. We can rearrange dates or just cancel your spot, meaning it can be made available to others should we get busy.

This weekend one booking made for Friday night possibly and definitely Saturday, did not turn up for either, leaving a bay with a reserved sign on for two nights. (Yes I texted to check, but no reply ☹️)

Perhaps we’re too flexible and trusting. It’s only a fiver to stay, so perhaps to some too insignificant an amount to need to let us know of plan changes, but not doing so may affect others away who want drop in to stay, but see the reserved sign, so drive on to their next option.

We currently don’t, nor do we want to, ask for upfront payment. Our policy is very much pay only if you stay. Upfront payment would open up the can of worms of reasonable refund policies and extra admin, with the payment companies being winners - keeping their transaction fees.

We don’t want to sign up to a booking site that charges you a booking fee and adds rigidity. Our booking system works well - you deal directly with us for the personal touch, and can choose from phoning, email, text, WhatsApp, Messenger or our website contact form.

In summary:
📆We love taking bookings - just please let us know as soon as possible if your plans change

🚐We also love our drive in on the day customers, and if there’s a reserved sign on the last bay do check at the cottage just in case things have changed.

💷£5 per van per night
💦£5 cassette emptying for guests and service drops

Yesterday we went out on a day trip to Delgatie Castle, which is less than 20 miles from here, on the outskirts of Turriff.

It’s a beautiful castle dating back nearly 1000 years, with informative boards in each room detailing its history and that of the Hay family owners and its ghosts!

The rooms on view are reached by a stone spiralling staircase, giving rise to beautiful views across the grounds as you progressively climb up the tower.

The gardens are free to visit, and there is also a cafe inside where we enjoyed Cullen skint and cream teas.

Another brilliant place to go in Fraserburgh when you’re feeling hungry.

We love promoting local businesses to our guests, and tell everyone who stays here why they should head into Fraserburgh and things to see and do there.

Even though the sun wasn’t shining today, and the ground has been getting a much needed water, our guests from last night messaged us just now about their venture into town.

Looks like they loved the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses and their food at Findlay’s Fish Bar & Diner 🥰

The sun is out again and the wind has turned to a warm southerly.

Our campers today have brought their chairs out now, while I’m off to dig out my sandals again and shed the jumper I fetched when it had cooled down over the last few days. Possibly the seals will be back sunbathing too.

We’ve plenty of availability so if you are worried about finding a stopover as it’s still August just give us a call, or drop in as you’re passing and knock on the cottage door.

£5 per van per night to stay
£5 cassette empty

Sea views, seating areas, warm welcome and only a short walk to the supermarket and bus stop, or 1.5 miles into town.
