A fantastic week at the English Seniors Championship for Phil Kitching.

The championship was played across two excellent venues near Ipswich, with opening rounds at Purdis Heath and Woodbridge Golf Clubs. The field of 248 players was then cut to the top 80 before the final round at Purdis Heath.

Phil was there from Sunday evening through to Friday, playing a practice round on each course before the three championship rounds began.

He was fortunate to be drawn alongside Danny Holmes and John Kennedy, both England players. John is the current British and Scottish Seniors Champion and is due to compete in the US Seniors Championship in a few weeks.

Phil commented: “It felt a little like playing alongside golfing royalty, and I don't mind admitting I was slightly nervous standing on the 1st tee. My championship didn't get off to the best start. After eight holes of the opening round, I was five over par and struggling to build any momentum. However, I managed to settle down, regain my focus and play some really solid golf from that point on.”

Over the next 46 holes, Phil was just two over par, finishing the championship at seven over par overall and tied for 16th place. He was particularly pleased to be the highest-placed Yorkshire player in the field.

A week of great golf, great company and an experience Phil will remember for a long time. Onwards to the next challenge!

Today marked the first day of summer and the first Seniors Major of the season, the Andrew Ainley Medal at Rudding Park Golf.

With rain threatening throughout the day, the golf gods were certainly smiling on the field as the showers largely passed by, allowing play to continue uninterrupted and ensuring the competition was completed in excellent conditions.

A strong field contested the prestigious medal, with some impressive scoring throughout the divisions. Congratulations go to David Balbi, who claimed the Andrew Ainley Medal with a superb nett 67.

Leading results were:

1st – David Balbi (Hcp 6) – Nett 67
2nd – George Bellis (Hcp 30) – Nett 70 (on count back)
3rd – Phil Thompson (Hcp 18) – Nett 70

There were also several twos recorded during the competition:

David Liversedge – Hole 5 and Hole 11; Richard Pallister – Hole 5 and Hole 14; Kevin May – Hole 11; Ted Moulson – Hole 11; Carl Kennady – Hole 14; Bruce Szawlowski – Hole 14; Paul Gowland – Hole 14; Andrew Williams – Hole 5.

The trophy was presented to David Balbi by Seniors Captain John Marchant, alongside Mrs Andrea Ainley and her daughter, continuing the proud tradition of this much-valued competition.

Thank you to everyone who took part and helped make the opening Seniors Major of the season such a successful day. We look forward to the rest of the summer programme.

A fantastic start to the league campaign for our Seniors team, who secured their first win on Thursday 21 May at home against Ripon City.

It was a close match throughout with a tense finish, as both teams gathered on the terrace to watch the final game conclude. In the end, Rudding edged the tie 3½–2½.

Well done to everyone who took part!
