A fantastic week at the English Seniors Championship for Phil Kitching.
The championship was played across two excellent venues near Ipswich, with opening rounds at Purdis Heath and Woodbridge Golf Clubs. The field of 248 players was then cut to the top 80 before the final round at Purdis Heath.
Phil was there from Sunday evening through to Friday, playing a practice round on each course before the three championship rounds began.
He was fortunate to be drawn alongside Danny Holmes and John Kennedy, both England players. John is the current British and Scottish Seniors Champion and is due to compete in the US Seniors Championship in a few weeks.
Phil commented: “It felt a little like playing alongside golfing royalty, and I don't mind admitting I was slightly nervous standing on the 1st tee. My championship didn't get off to the best start. After eight holes of the opening round, I was five over par and struggling to build any momentum. However, I managed to settle down, regain my focus and play some really solid golf from that point on.”
Over the next 46 holes, Phil was just two over par, finishing the championship at seven over par overall and tied for 16th place. He was particularly pleased to be the highest-placed Yorkshire player in the field.
A week of great golf, great company and an experience Phil will remember for a long time. Onwards to the next challenge!
