🐍 What an incredible afternoon at Richmond Exotics! 🐍

We recently popped over to visit our friends at Richmond Exotics, and we had the most amazing time!

For those of you who don't already know, Richmond Exotics is a family-run, fully registered charity based at Clay's Garden Centre in Washington. They're dedicated to the education, rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming of exotic animals, with a real passion for improving captive care and promoting lifelong animal welfare.

From fascinating reptiles and amphibians to incredible invertebrates and exotic mammals, there's so much to discover and learn about!

🐍 Looking to welcome a new friend into your family? Many of their animals are looking for their forever homes and are available for adoption!

🦎 Fancy an afternoon out? Why not pop in for a visit, meet some of their amazing residents and make a donation to support the charity?

What is happening to our animals?! They're all becoming…ZOMBIFIED!!! 🧟‍♂️🐍

Only joking, of course! Ziggy is currently in shed!

Shedding is a completely natural process where a snake casts off its old outer layer of skin to make way for a new one as it grows. It can also help remove external parasites, such as mites, and allow damaged skin to heal.

Ziggy is currently "in blue". This is the pre-shed phase, when a new layer of skin forms underneath the old one. A lubricating fluid builds up between the two layers, causing the skin to look dull, cloudy or bluish!

Chilli is getting into the Halloween spirit, eating his creepy crawlies and showing us his zombie eyes!

Did you know bearded dragons have nictitating membranes, or third eyelids!? It's a thin, translucent tissue that moves horizontally across their eye. This membrane protects the eye from dust, sand, harsh light, and prevents drying out!

It'sssss time to meet another of our creepy crawlies, just in time for Halloween!

Meet our Madagascar hissing cockroaches! These little creatures have a pretty unusual party trick…they can actually HISS!

But why do they hiss? Unlike many insects, these cockroaches produce their famous sound by forcing air through tiny breathing holes called spiracles along their bodies. They use this hiss to communicate, attract mates and warn off potential threats.

So if you hear a little hissss this Halloween, don’t panic…it might just be one of our cockroaches saying hello! 👀

It's almost Halloween, so we thought we'd introduce you to some of our creepy crawlies!
First up, meet Pumpkin, one of our Ghana speckled-leg millipedes!
Did you know that millipedes usually have between 40 and 400 legs? However one species, Eumillipes persephone, can have over 1,300 legs! That's a lot of shoes 👀

🙏🏻 PLEASE HELP SUPPORT OUR CLIP CHAIR, MICHAEL BOOTH 💠

Today we are reaching out to the community to help us support someone who has spent so much of his life helping others.

Michael is our much-valued CLIP Chair, who has dedicated countless hours to charity work, supporting people living with dementia and their families, and making a difference in our community and nationwide and probably worldwide to be honest!

Michael lives with Young Onset Dementia, specifically Dysexecutive Alzheimer's disease, and sadly over the last six weeks his condition has deteriorated rapidly.

His mobility has been significantly affected, and he can no longer walk unaided.

Aline (Michael's wife and carer) and Michael are now trying to raise £2,000 towards a suitable powered mobility chair, including an additional battery and practical accessories.

This would help Michael attend appointments, visit loved ones, stay involved in community activities and continue doing the charity work he cares so deeply about.

Despite exploring NHS support and charitable funding, the urgency of Michael's needs means the family are having to raise the money themselves.

We would be incredibly grateful if our wonderful community could come together to support Aline and Michael.
