Askrigg ➡️ Mill Gill Watefall (return walk)

We posted a video of Mill Gill Waterfall this morning, and now here’s a few more photos of things to see in and around this walk.

Starting from the 15th century St Oswald’s Church in Askrigg, head down Mill Lane. Within 400m you’ll pass the enchanting Askrigg Tiny Library and Askrigg Tiny Free Art Gallery which will make you smile.

200m after the gallery you turn right off Mill Lane to cross a hay meadow on a stone flagged path. At the end of the path you enter woodland following the path to the right past the ruins of an old mill.

Shortly after you turn left to cross a lovely little footbridge crossing the narrow beck, then it’s over a stile and turning right to cross the right hand side of the field for only 100m keeping the wall to your right.

Over another stile and you’re back into the woodland, with the track being besides a drystone wall (to your left) and steep drop into the valley bottom (to your right). Then it’s about 800m walk heading gradually uphill and minding the tree roots, until you come to the first fork to the right which you take to head 150m downhill to the waterfall.

Take care if you decide to step down onto the stone bottom, it’s incredibly greasy when damp and like skating on ice.

Retrace your steps to return to Askrigg. In the centre there are three 1980’s All Creatures Great & Small locations to see, Skeldale House, St Oswalds Church and Kings Arms Askrigg which all featured heavily in the BBC series.

The Kings Arms is full of character and a good pint and good food. Middle House Askrigg opposite is also really popular and of high quality. Or just have an ice cream / cake / coffee at The Bake-Well, Market Place (they are very proud of their brand new windows) and watch the world go by. Finally do pop into Heather and Grouse which is an artist / crafters owned cooperative offering you the chance to buy something unique from the area.

Mill Gill Waterfall - Askrigg

We’re having waterfall week to help you feel cool in this very hot weather.

Mill Gill is a great waterfall to visit in boiling heat as the walk to it from Askrigg is predominantly in / around shade.

It’s just a miles walk each way from the centre of Askrigg down Mill Lane, then across one meadow and after that you’re in the trees. It’s uphill all the way then, minding a lot of tree roots, but you will be in the shade and it will feel cooler.

Askrigg is only 5 miles drive of a 10km walk from Heart of Hawes Holiday Cottage and is also served by the Little White Bus running up and down Wensleydale.

Aysgill Force - Near Hawes & Gayle.

To supplement the video of the waterfall we posted this morning; here’s a photo showing the walking route and the type of features you come across on the walk.

It’s about 3 to 3.5 miles round trip from Heart of Hawes Holiday Cottage depending on the route variations you take. This walk has it all, really varied scenery and it’s ever so photogenic. Oh and did I mention cheese…yes you can return via Wensleydale Creamery and the cheese tasting room.

The only downside to this walk is it’s very up and down with some steep sections and can get slippy and muddy at times.

With it being so hot this week, here’s a cooling waterfall video of Aysgill Force just south of Hawes and Gayle.

Doesn’t it look beautiful? Naturally convex in shape, the perfect time to visit it is early afternoon when it catches the sun.

There’s a stunning three mile circular walk to the fall from Heart of Hawes Holiday Cottage…first up The Pennine Way to Gayle then through wildflower meadows and then dropping into the natural gorge to walk up to the fall.

More often than not, you’ll see no one en route and will have the waterfall to yourself.

I don’t think I’ve ever done this walk and not felt I’ve seen the best of the dales.

Hawes Ice Cream Parlour - POV

With scorchio weather descending on the country and the ‘Costa Del Wensleydale’, come on down to the bigger and better for 2026 Hawes Ice Cream Parlour.

There are some great flavours on offer, and (if you dare!) sit down and strap into the airplane seating and prepare to take off to ice cream heaven! They have made this parlour a fun place to visit for all ages.

Just 300m walk from Heart of Hawes Holiday Cottage. That’s the beauty of our cottage. We’re in a quiet part of Hawes, but it’s just a minute or so to all the shops, cafes and pubs in town.

Well Hawes and Upper Wensleydale is looking beautiful and stunning at this time of year, as too are Upper Wharfedale and Swaledale.

Here’s quite a few photos taken last week. I was in the cottage with my oldest friend Steve and my eldest daughter Sophia.

💦💧Can you name the nine waterfalls we dropped in to see?

🏃‍♂️ I managed three fabulous runs, two around Hawes and one along The River Wharfe by Yockenthwaite Farm.

🌼🪻The wildflower meadow yellow hues are really developing, and the meadow grass is very long. It’s going to be a really good hay season this year, all being well.

🥘 🫖 ☕️ We dropped into Dent for the first time since the road reopened after the land slip and had a look round the Dent Heritage Museum. I really liked the food / feeling to Stone Close tea room (it’s got a full food offer), and commend it to our guests.

🍦Also my first visit into Hawes Ice Cream Parlour since they expanded / relocated to the right hand side of the Market Hall lobby. Love the aircraft seats to sit in, brings a bit of fun to the place and the ice creams were exceptional.

🍺 🐟 🍟 🥩 And after a bit of recent dieting / getting fitter I did regress by having a few beers at The Green Dragon later on acoustic music night and I may or may not have been seen eating in at Hawes Chippie (I’ve really missed eating the best fish and chips in the world). And some Cockett’s steaks may have been BBQ’d in the garden too!

🎱 Wednesday early evening was bingo in Hawes Market Hall (full turnout), raising money for Hawes Christmas lights.

🎨 🧹 🔨 At the cottage we were busy. As always it’s just little touches / details we work on; we’ve introduced a bench out the front so you can look out across Hawes, and we’ve now a lot of foldable camping chairs you can borrow for picnics or Richard Fawcett’s Working Sheepdog demonstration. We repainted the front door and a couple of radiators and the garden is looking neat and tidy.

🐣🐦‍⬛ We’ve also got a family of swifts nesting in our back passage. They are lovely to see and hear.
