🌿 Tip Tuesday: Have a Plan B! 🌿

If there’s one thing we can guarantee about a UK wedding, it’s that we can’t guarantee the weather! ☀️🌦️🌧️

When planning your big day, it’s worth thinking beyond the dream forecast. A Plan B isn’t just for rain. Recent summers have shown us that extreme heat can be just as challenging as a downpour, especially for guests, children, pets, and anyone spending long periods outdoors.

Ask your venue how they’ve handled different weather scenarios in the past:
🌂 Wet weather ceremonies
☀️ Shade and cooling options during hot spells
💨 Windy conditions and marquee considerations
🥤 Guest comfort, hydration, and shelter

A well-thought-out backup plan means you can relax and enjoy your day, whatever the skies decide to do. After all, the best weddings aren’t remembered for the weather… they’re remembered for the laughter, the love, and the people who shared them. 💚

✨ Wedding Throwback ✨

Some weddings stay with you long after the last guest has gone home, and L & N’s was definitely one of them. 💚

Their vision was relaxed, fun and completely focused on celebrating with the people they love. Think rustic festival vibes, long banquet tables under blue skies, a food truck, hydration stations for guests, a pamper tent, and not one but two marquees… one for dining and drinks, and one dedicated entirely to dancing the night away! 🎪🍷🕺

The result? A wedding that felt effortlessly stylish whilst still having that magical “big party in the garden” atmosphere that so many couples dream of.

L & N were an absolute joy to work with from start to finish. Calm, relaxed, and ready to enjoy every moment of the day, they created a celebration that reflected them perfectly.

Here’s what they had to say afterwards:

💬 “What a ride! As soon as we turned up at Great Betley Farmhouse in January 2022 we knew it was where we would celebrate our marriage in the summer.

The place speaks for itself, it’s a beautiful blank canvas with an incredible set up and picturesque backdrops, but more importantly Kim, the owner, really made us feel at ease and like we could be ourselves which is what you want when you get married.

She’s all over her own organisation and was so helpful in the run up and on the day. The day itself was unbelievable, the sun shone, the place looked spectacular, and our guests had an unforgettable time.

We couldn’t recommend Kim and Great Betley Farmhouse more highly. The connections with suppliers was brilliant and it just felt like we were having a huge party in our own garden! Thanks Kim 🙂 x”

Thank you, L & N. It was an absolute pleasure to be part of your day and to watch your wedding unfold exactly as you imagined it. Wishing you both many years of happiness together. 🥂💕

Have you heard of Celestial Whimsigoth? 🌙✨

According to Rock My Wedding, it’s one of the wedding trends gaining attention right now, blending celestial details with rich, moody colours and a touch of vintage magic.

Think midnight blue, emerald green, deep burgundy and rich purple, layered with velvet textures, candlelight, metallic accents, stars, moons and just a hint of the mysterious. It’s romantic, dramatic and a little bit enchanting without tipping into full fantasy territory.

Inspired by the trend, I asked AI to imagine how a Celestial Whimsigoth wedding might look in a marquee setting. The result? Jewel-toned tablescapes, twinkling lights, celestial details and plenty of atmosphere. The first pic was AI’s idea of how it would look, the second and third how it could look. With the right florist, lighting and styling team, much of this could genuinely be recreated for a wedding.

What do you think? Is Celestial Whimsigoth a trend you’d embrace, or would you prefer something a little more traditional? 🌙💫

Thursday’s Battle Report: Triffid Control, Day 2

I spent the last Monday and Tuesday afternoons engaged in hand-to-hand combat with the driveway weeds.

The enemy has been stubborn, deeply entrenched, and showing an alarming willingness to regroup overnight. Every time I remove one pile, three more seem to appear. I’m beginning to suspect they’re breeding while my back is turned.

This weeks tally (so far!) is pictured here. Several impressive casualties have been removed from the gravel, although intelligence reports suggest there are still numerous insurgents hiding further down the drive.

At this point I’m not entirely convinced that I’m weeding the driveway. It feels more like I’m attempting to reclaim territory from a hostile botanical takeover. 🌱⚔️

Still, progress is progress. Two days in, several piles down, only eleventy billion square yards to go…

If anyone needs me, I’ll be the one wandering around muttering “I definitely did this bit already” while the weeds laugh quietly amongst themselves. 😂

Before I disappeared off to an appointment last week, I was lucky enough to meet some of this year’s barn owl youngsters! 🦉💖

The licensed ornithologists visited our barn owl box to ring, weigh and measure this year’s brood, and what a fantastic year it has been. Six owlets were carefully checked, with the possibility of a seventh youngster being nearby but not present when the box was inspected (flew off when they approached!)

The owls are certainly early this year. Several of the youngsters have already been venturing out of the box and practising their flying and hunting skills, although they’re still very much part of the family and continue to use the box as home base.

I only managed to photograph three of them before I had to dash off, but they all had very different personalities! The first owlet was a feisty little girl who made it abundantly clear that she had no interest whatsoever in posing for photographs. Every time the camera appeared, she stubbornly looked in the opposite direction! 📸😂 Her siblings were rather more cooperative.

I never tire of those beautiful heart-shaped faces. It’s hard to believe that these fluffy youngsters will soon be silently gliding across the fields and meadows around Great Betley Farmhouse.

A huge thank you to the licensed ringers for the important work they do monitoring these wonderful birds. Seeing so many healthy young owls this year was a real privilege and a lovely reminder of the wildlife we are lucky enough to share this little corner of Sussex with. 🦉✨

Which owlet would you have picked as your favourite? The camera-shy diva, the fluffy youngster, or the one who finally agreed to look at the photographer? 😍

Let’s be honest… wedding insurance is never going to be the exciting part of planning your big day.

Nobody is creating a Pinterest board called “Policies & Premiums” alongside their colour schemes and cake inspiration. 🎂✨

But having spent several years working in the travel insurance industry, I’ve seen first-hand just how quickly unexpected events can derail even the best-laid plans. Most people don’t think they’ll ever need insurance… right up until the moment they do.

A wedding involves thousands of pounds being paid out to venues, caterers, photographers, florists, entertainers and many other suppliers, often months or even years in advance. If a supplier ceases trading, illness strikes, severe weather intervenes, or something else completely unforeseen happens, having the right cover in place can make a huge difference.

One of the biggest mistakes I see couples make is leaving insurance until later in the planning process. If you’re going to take out a policy, do it before you start booking and paying deposits, otherwise some events may not be covered.

Hopefully you’ll never need to make a claim and the policy will sit quietly in a drawer doing absolutely nothing. In the insurance world, that’s actually the best possible outcome!

Have you taken out wedding insurance, or is it something you hadn’t considered yet? 💍🌿

🌳 Well, that wasn’t on today’s to-do list…

I looked out this morning and thought one of the trees by the pond had come down overnight. On closer inspection, it turns out that parts of one of the old willows has decided they no longer wish to remain attached to the rest of the tree!

Thankfully no damage done, nobody hurt, and the gate is still standing. The willow has simply deposited some rather large branches across the grass as if presenting us with a giant green gift wrapped in leaves. 🎁🌿

The good news is that willows are remarkably resilient trees and often treat this sort of thing as a minor inconvenience rather than a catastrophe. The less good news is that somebody now has a sizeable amount of unexpected pruning to deal with… and that somebody appears to be me. 🤦‍♀️😂

On the bright side, Alice wasn’t responsible for this one. For once.

Autumn weddings have a kind of magic all of their own 🍂🍷

Deep burgundy tones, velvet ribbons, candlelight, rich florals and golden details that glow as the evenings draw in… there’s something wonderfully cinematic about an autumn celebration.

This palette works beautifully against the Sussex countryside too, especially as the leaves begin to turn around the South Downs and Chanctonbury Ring 🍁✨

Thinking:
• Velvet table runners
• Dark wine-coloured bridesmaid dresses
• Taper candles & brass details
• Seasonal foliage & dahlias
• Cosy fires, warm lighting & mulled cocktails

Proof that autumn doesn’t whisper… it smoulders. ❤️‍🔥

✨ Why do handcrafted items cost more? ✨

It’s a question that crops up time and time again.

When you buy something handmade, you’re not just paying for the materials. You’re paying for the skill, experience, time, attention to detail, and often the countless unseen hours that go into creating it.

A factory can produce hundreds or even thousands of identical items in an hour. A craftsperson might spend hours carefully making just one piece, checking every detail along the way.

This pic popped up on my memories this morning so although I no longer make stationery I thought it was time to give a shoutout to all the craftsmen & women out there! Years ago, when I was making wedding stationery, I spent around five hours hand-making and sewing together 100 tiny ribbon bows for wedding stationery. The ribbon itself wasn’t expensive, but the time, patience, and several needle-pricked fingers certainly were! 🩹😂

Whether it’s handmade jewellery, bespoke furniture, artwork, cakes, clothing, pottery, or any other artisan product, what you’re buying is something created by a real person rather than a production line.

Handcrafted items carry a little piece of the maker with them. They may not be the cheapest option, but they often have a quality, character and individuality that mass-produced products simply can’t replicate.

So next time you see a handcrafted item and wonder why it costs more, remember: you’re not just buying a product.

You’re buying the hours, the expertise, the care, and the passion that went into creating it. ❤️

PS: If you ever visit a craft or wedding fair, please don’t tell a maker you’re going to copy their design at home to save money! 😂 What you’re paying for isn’t just the ribbon, fabric, clay or paint, it’s the years of experience that mean they can create something beautiful while making it look easy. 😉

💧 Wedding Tip Tuesday: Hydration, Hydration, Hydration! 💧

When planning your wedding day, it’s easy to focus on the champagne, cocktails and celebratory drinks… but don’t forget the humble glass of water!

Whether you’re getting married in the height of summer, dancing the night away, or simply spending a long day on your feet, keeping everyone hydrated is incredibly important.

✔️ Provide water stations around your venue
✔️ Make sure guests have easy access to soft drinks throughout the day and evening
✔️ Consider jugs of iced water with fruit slices for a simple, elegant touch
✔️ Encourage your wedding party to drink water while getting ready

Not everyone drinks alcohol, and even those who do will appreciate having plenty of water available to keep them feeling their best.

A well-hydrated guest is a happy guest… and far more likely to stay on the dance floor until the very end! 🥂💃🕺
