Crossbasket Castle is an exceptional and unique ‘A’ listed historic building that has been a home to a number of distinguished families throughout its 600-year history. It is situated in extensive private grounds between East Kilbride and High Blantyre near Glasgow with excellent access and motorway links from Glasgow, Edinburgh and the south. The Castle is approached through a private gated entrance and its own 500 yard driveway, passing through exclusive manicured garden grounds with many specimen trees from around the world, a large stretch of woodland, extensive nature walks and a beautiful stretch of river featuring majestic waterfalls. The oldest part of the Castle is the 15th Century Tower, built on a rise high above the river, originally to improve its defensive position. The Tower has been extended in Victorian times to form the present day Castle. The Castle is steeped in a rich Scottish history most notably occupied as a family home by Charles Mackintosh, the inventor of the famous “mac” raincoat. The mac was invented and developed right here on the castle grounds in a substantial mill, the ruins of which can still be found across the river at the rear of the Castle.
