The Howardian Hills National Landscape boasts some of England's darkest skies, offering brilliant stargazing opportunities. Several rural villages in the area—including Husthwaite, Terrington, Bulmer, Crayke, and Ampleforth Abbey—have earned official "Dark Skies Friendly Community" status by reducing light pollution and improving outdoor lighting.

Designated Dark Sky Hubs Thanks to joint initiatives with the North York Moors National Park, the Howardian Hills Partnership has heavily promoted the reduction of glare and light spill.
Several villages stand out as top spots to view the Milky Way and the cosmos:

Husthwaite: Recently accredited for installing dark-sky-friendly LED fixtures on public and community buildings.

Crayke: Features elevated vantage points that provide excellent, unobstructed views of the horizon.

Terrington & Bulmer: Located in the heart of the hills, these quiet villages offer great naked-eye stargazing away from urban glow.

Ampleforth Abbey: Features an expansive estate with dedicated dark-sky areas and regular stargazing outreach.
