Is a little escape needed before we hurtle towards winter and all the festive mayhem? Perhaps it’s time to book a little autumn or winter escape in Somerset, or even give yourself something to look forward to in the New Year.

Come and spend a few days in Barrington, with countryside on the doorstep, good food waiting at the pub, freshly baked treats from our bakery, and plenty of beautiful walks to fill the quieter hours.

A few slower days in Somerset might be just the thing, and you can bring the dog for some of our rooms.

We mentioned last week that our festive menus are now finalised, and there are a few dishes we’re particularly excited about.

Start with our Westcombe’s Cheddar tartlet, with scorched onions, b**r vinegar, lovage and apple salad. Followed by slow-cooked turkey leg, bacon and apricot ballotine, with braised red cabbage, pomme Anna, sautéed sprout flowers and Madeira sauce.

C***r country, National Apple Day 2026

There are few things more Somerset than an orchard in autumn. Rows of old apple trees, fruit scattered through the grass, the smell of crushed apples in the air and c***r slowly making its way from orchard to glass.

Visit the orchards at Somerset C***r Brandy Somerset C***r Brandy wander through Barrington Court Barrington Court NT apple orchards, or call in at Perry’s C***r Perry's C***r and you begin to see just how deeply c***r is woven into this landscape.

And after a day spent exploring c***r country, there are few better ways to finish than with a glass of local c***r at our bar, or perhaps a small glass of Somerset C***r Brandy. Autumn tastes particularly good in Somerset.

We’ve had some lovely autumn sunshine at the front of the pub this month, along with plenty of the rain we were all wishing for only a few months ago. That’s autumn in Somerset for you. Low golden light one minute, a proper downpour the next.

Here’s hoping the months ahead bring us both in equal measure. And whatever the weather, there’s always a warm spot waiting inside the pub.

There are pumpkins aplenty in the market garden this year.

We have rather a lot of them, which means the kitchen has plenty to work with as we move into the colder months. Soups, sides, sauces and seasonal dishes all lend themselves rather well to a good pumpkin.
