Have you ever looked out across Batty Moss after dark? 👀

Local railway folklore tells of a mysterious figure known as the Batty Moss Phantom.

The tale tells of a railway worker who lost his life on the line in the late 1800s. Years later, walkers claimed to see a strange light moving across the moor near Ribblehead Viaduct, where there were no houses, roads or obvious explanation for it.

Was it mist? Moonlight? A wandering lantern?

Or something else entirely…

The story later became known as The Legend of Batty Moss, adding another curious chapter to the history surrounding Ribblehead and the Settle-Carlisle Railway.

Next time you’re sitting by the fire at The Station Inn as darkness falls over the viaduct, keep an eye on the moor outside.

You never know what you might spot.🔥
