The Scottish Borders, recently described by Jeremy Clarkson as Britain’s “most beautiful bit”, has some of the best walking trails if you’re looking to layer up and enjoy the countryside this autumn… 🍂❄️
📍 Penielheugh
The Waterloo Monument can be seen for miles (and from the living room window at The House in the Hill). This circular route offers a fantastic view of the Borders with excellent coffee at the end from Out-there Artisan
📍 Bowhill House
From the longer hike round the Duchess’s Drive (7 miles) to an easy, child-friendly wander round the lake at Bowhill House & Grounds - there are walks to suit everyone at this estate near Selkirk.
📍 St Cuthbert’s Way
Famous among seasoned walkers, St Cuthbert’s Way is a 62.5 mile trail that stretches from Melrose Abbey to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, in Northumberland. You can join the trail in just 10 minutes (by car) from The House in the Hill or use Dere Street to get you there from our family farm.
📍 Dere Street
Just 2 minutes from The House in the Hill, Dere Street was built by the Romans as their main route north to the Firth of Forth, from Corbridge, near Hadrian’s Wall in the north of England. This trail covers varied terrain and showcases the Borderlands beautifully.
