Toxic Squash Syndrome affects plants from the cucurbitaceae (cucumber) family.
This includes courgette, squash, cucumbers, and melons. If you eat any of those vegetables and they are bitter, spit it out.

High levels of cucurbitacin, which cause toxic squash syndrome or cucurbitacin poisoning, occur when a squash, courgettes, cucumbers or melons cross pollinated, If the seeds are saved the resulting plants grown can produce toxic vegetables.

Symptoms can be as mild normal food poisoning but if a lot is consumed it can result in complete hair loss two week after the initial poisoning. This happened to two ladies in France after eating pumpkin 🎃 soup.

Unfortunately, it has resulted in the death of a German gentleman in 2015.

We have had three visitor to Poison in the Garden who have told us their stories of how they have been poisoned by toxic squash syndrome.

Elderberries from the elder tree (Sambucus Nigra) is traditional used to make a syrup to help with colds and flu.

If you want to make a syrup, make sure you heat it to destroy the cyanogenic glycosides in the berries.
Also, make sure you remove all the stalks and unripe berries.

The dry weather has revealed the old flower beds in the sunken garden. Designed by Sophia Maitland Kelly in 1860 and planted up by our Head Gardener Gullick.

A sunken garden is made to protect your plants from the weather. The design apparently originates from Italy.

It always had a fence around it to stop rabbits, which slightly ruined the effect. My grandfather removed the flower bed in the 50s when our last gardener left.

We wonder whether we can plant it up with a flowering lawn plant so it can be mowed while being able to see the layout, but we're not sure what plant to use!
