The Borrowdale Valley, where nature puts on a show 🌳

Running ten miles south from Derwentwater to the foot of Scafell Pike, England's highest peak, this is the Lake District at its most extraordinary. Dry stone walls give way to ancient woodland, woodland thins to open fellside, and water is everywhere! cascading, threading. running beneath stone bridges.

The wettest inhabited place in England, Borrowdale receives around eleven feet of rain a year. The result: temperate rainforest. Ancient Atlantic oaks draped in mosses, liverworts and lichens in colours that catch you off guard. In 2024, 721 hectares were declared a National Nature Reserve.

Above Grange Bridge, the valley squeezes between Kings How and Castle Crag the Jaws of Borrowdale, carved by ice over thousands of years - before opening into something wide and pastoral. It shifts the scale of things in a way that lingers.

Walking routes for every level. The Bowder Stone, a house-sized boulder balanced on one edge since the Georgian era. Light changing over Derwentwater. This place doesn't require effort to get under your skin.
