Apple juice making! 🍏

Apple season comes to a close this week. We have scrumped as many apples off the trees as possible for snacks and lunches. Made apple cakes, crumbles, plus, crushed and juiced as many apples 🍎 as we can for cloudy apple juice to keep in the freezer. It’s nice to have a homegrown source of vitamin C stored for those dark winter mornings. Over 20 years we planted orchard trees here and there, it’s lovely to see them bear fruit. And even if it’s not a commercial enterprise, it gives great heart, to keep heritage apple trees alive, enjoy the fruit and watch the trees support bees and other wild creatures too.

Summer 2026 photo dump! ☀️

To tell the truth we abandoned socials this summer as it was a very busy season at Treberfedd Farm. 🚜

In May the countryside burst into life, bringing the perfect weather for honey making and holidays! 🐝

Early summer jobs of putting up electric fences, moving cows and calves, ewes and lambs to fresh pasture, mucking out the sheds. It was all a lot of hard work!

At the end of May the first load of silage was gathered from the fields. 🌾

The cows grazed the organic meadows and by early summer their spring born calves were growing quickly.

A new young Hereford bull, ‘Albany Ledger’, arrived from Cambridge. He joined our herd of traditional Hereford’s as the new stock bull.

Sammy didn’t seem too impressed!

Before mid summer we sheared the sheep and packed the wool into big sacks to send to the British wool marketing board. 🐑

British Wool sort and sell the wool to factories that make carpets and clothing!

The sheepdog didn’t fancy a haircut!

The long hot summer created the most beautiful evenings at the beach 🌅

The sun made the hay meadows blooming marvellous too!

The cows found the heatwave difficult, but luckily they could get some much needed shade under the farm’s tall hedges.

Back at the coast, buckets, spades and boat trips were very popular!

What a difference a hedge makes for farm animal welfare! Not to mention all the wild creatures sheltering in the hedgerow. On 25th June this year I found that the hedge cooled the air by 10 degrees. In the middle of the field it was 45 degrees , a temperature that causes severe heat stress to animals and soil life. Nature Friendly Farming benefits farmers and wildlife. We must diversify and enrich our landscape with trees if we are to protect food production and biodiversity simultaneously

Every winter we plant trees 🌳 on the farm, for wildlife, but also because they give shade, shelter, feed, minerals & vitamins to our cows and sheep. Trees also stop the soil drying out so fast in summer and keep the soil warmer in winter. Work with trees is improving the productivity and resilience of our organic nature friendly farming system.

☀️The hottest May day ever recorded in the UK.☀️

And on days like this, farming systems are tested fast.

When soils are tired, grass burns off quickly.
When fields are bare, moisture disappears.
When animals have no shelter, heat stress rises.

But farms built around healthy pasture often cope differently.

Deep-rooted grasslands.
Higher soil organic matter.
More ground cover.
Better water retention.
More shade.
More resilience.

This isn’t about “perfect” farming systems.

It’s about building landscapes that can cope with extremes — because extremes are becoming normal.

Grass is not just feed.
It’s infrastructure.
