How far would you drive for Sunday lunch?

We drove 42 miles through the Peak District this weekend after discovering a chef's pub we'd never even heard of.

It turned out to be one of those rare afternoons that reminds us exactly why we both fell in love with food and hospitality all those years ago.

We've written about the journey, the people, the little details that made us smile, and why we came home inspired with ideas for Lane Head Larder.

Angela, Vicki and Alice headed off for a day at Peak Wildlife Park recently.

I stayed behind at Lane Head again, which is becoming something of a theme.

Judging by the photos, Alice had a considerably more exciting day than I did.

There were lemurs, deer, wallabies and, most importantly, the chance to get properly close to some of them.

The wallabies were clearly a hit.

And after a full day wandering around the park, meeting animals and generally having a brilliant time, you might reasonably expect a five-year-old to be tired.

Apparently not.

There was still enough energy left for a headstand back at Lane Head.

Ben and Alice went off on a little Peak District adventure yesterday and headed to Speedwell Cavern in Castleton.

I didn’t get chance to go with them this time, but judging by the photos and how much they both enjoyed it, I may have missed out.

There were helmets, underground tunnels, a boat trip through the old mine workings and, naturally, plenty of Peak District weather on the way through Winnats Pass.

Alice thought it was brilliant, which is probably the best recommendation you can get when you’re looking for somewhere to take younger children.

It also looks like a very good option for one of those slightly damp Peak District days when a long walk suddenly feels a bit less appealing.

Peak District Walks: The Honest Version Walks for Thor’s Cave

I moved to the Peak District assuming I was already a walker.

Our first proper expedition involved 6,000 Jason-sized steps, considerably more elevation than expected, 20-year-old gardening ASICS, a broken Crocs strap, ducks attempting to steal our Walkers and an essential recovery programme of full-fat Pepsi, two pints and Hartington cheese.

Five months after moving to the Peak District, I finally went for my first proper walk.

I’d been confidently describing myself as someone who enjoys walking. It turns out owning a pair of 20-year-old ASICS now used for gardening and actually being a walker are two quite different things.

We set off from Wetton Mill intending to complete around 12,000 steps through the Manifold Valley and up to Thor’s Cave.

After approximately 6,000 Jason-sized steps, a considerable amount of elevation and a brief but honest assessment of two men over 50, we made the sensible decision to retreat over Wetton Hills.

We did reach Thor’s Cave, though, and learned several useful things along the way:

🥾 My gardening ASICS held together remarkably well
🐊 Somebody else’s Crocs made it up, but apparently not back down
🦆 The ducks at Wetton Mill operate like Devon seagulls and wanted our Walkers
🥤 Full-fat Pepsi is an excellent emergency recovery drink
🍺 Two pints and Hartington cheese can rescue almost any expedition

The Peak District equivalent of a row of Vespas parked on a Roman street. 🐑🇮🇹

All squeezed into the same spot, slightly chaotic and with absolutely no regard for the Highway Code.

Although, unlike Rome, nobody’s leaning on a horn and they’re unlikely to move anywhere in a hurry.

Our new Lane Head Barns website is live 🎉

We’ve given the whole site a fresh new look, with much more information about the barns, the local area and planning your stay in the Peak District.

But one of the things we’re most pleased with is the new **combined availability calendar**.

If you’re looking to book **Morridge View and Mixon View together**, you can now see at a glance the dates when **both properties are available**.

It makes planning a larger family get-together, celebration or holiday with friends much easier, without having to flick backwards and forwards between two separate calendars.

🏡 **Morridge View** sleeps up to 10 + 2 Infants
🏡 **Mixon View** sleeps 2 + 1 Infant
🏡 Book both and you have your own little corner of the Peak District

Well, this is awkward… 🇺🇸

It appears the USA has invaded the Peak District.

Never mind Greenland, they’ve planted their flag on the hill up to Mixon View.

We’re monitoring the situation closely, but so far they seem peaceful. No tanks, no troops, just sheep, wildflowers and suspiciously good views.

Should we alert the authorities, or put the kettle on?

Sometimes the loveliest reviews aren’t left online. They’re left waiting for you in the guest book. ❤️

Our guests from Japan have just spent ten days with their family at Morridge View, and left us this beautiful message.

They wrote about the peace and quiet, the wind in the trees, the farm views and even the fresh milk, saying their time here had been “truly healing for us.”

But I think our favourite line has to be:

“The unique landscapes of England are so different from Japan’s beauty, and they will stay in our hearts forever.”

They wondered if they might be our first guests from Japan.

We think they probably are. 🇯🇵❤️🇬🇧

It’s rather lovely to think that this little corner of the Staffordshire Moorlands will be going home with them.

Thank you, Mackenzie family. We’re so pleased Morridge View became part of your memories of England.

It’s always a little bit special here at Lane Head Barns.

But this evening, the Staffordshire Moorlands decided to put on a proper show.

We watched the sun drop behind the fields, turning everything that gorgeous late-summer gold, and then the eclipse appeared.

No crowds. No traffic. Just us, the barns, the fields and a rather extraordinary sky.

Sometimes you forget to stop and look at where you live.

Tonight was a good reminder. 🌙☀️
