A new piece of Beatles decor here at George's old home in Speke, !
"Strawberry Fields Forever"- graphic art, courtesy of British artist Nigel Abbey.

Framed print now sitting on the Harrison's old hutch/ kitchen cabinet.

Nigel (and his wife) were actually my first true visitors/guests that I had personally at 25 Upton Green, literally the day after I officially bought the house. They will remember... no chairs, nowhere to sit, a barren place.
His 2 large posters also hang on the wall there in the kitchen.
Cheers!

"Say, say, say... what you want-" but this is a pretty impressive performance from in the latest UK Album Charts. Number 1, with his homage to Liverpool!
(And interesting... beating out MJ for the top spot.)

We've seen just a couple days ago that the official Dungeon Lane sign in Speke has been taken/stolen (again?). Let's hope the Council figures this all out soon- or else a lot of fans and tourists will be mightily disappointed when they travel there.

If you make the trip to Speke, don't forget to swing on by to 25 Upton Green. ๐Ÿ™ƒ๐Ÿ˜Ž Cheers!

๐ŸŒŸHISTORY๐ŸŒŸ

A very cool transition from modern day Upton Green to a 1953 street party, in celebration of the coronation of the late Queen Elizabeth II. Videos like this really help to visualise the past!

According to George Harrison's old friend Geoff Russell, the 10 year old George is on the left dressed in dark by the lamppost, wearing a crown party hat along with the other children. Also in attendence is Geoff himself, sat opposite.

Thank you to Peter Hodgson for creating and sharing this transition!

๐ŸŽถ๐Ÿ  25 Upton Green isn't just a home ๐Ÿ ๐ŸŽถ

In the early days, it was also a frequent rehearsal space for John Lennon, Paul McCartney and of course, George Harrison. However, there is one figure pictured who you may not be familiar with.

Standing alongside them in the first photo, taken in the same period that they would have been rehearsing at Upton Green, is George's very close friend and fellow student at the Liverpool Institute, Arthur Kelly. Arthur also appears alongside George in the second photo, which was actually taken at Upton Green in the back garden and in the third, which was taken at a birthday party in Liverpool.

In the very early days, Arthur joined George's very first band 'The Rebels' along with George's brother Peter, who of course rehearsed at Upton Green. Although Arthur did not continue to pursue a career in music like George, he later made it as an actor, appearing in multiple productions, including an uncredited appearance in 'Magical Mystery Tour' as a passenger on the bus and as a character in famous British Soap 'Coronation Street' between 1975 and 1982.

Outside of acting, Arthur influenced one of the lines in The Beatles' 1964 film 'A Hard Day's Night'. Arthur often complimented George's hair, which is the reason that George decided that the answer to "what would you call this hairstyle?" should be "Arthur".

We try to relay some of the "ultra-local" recollections and anecdotes about and on this page.
We read and hear different things within Speke.

One longtime local just claimed very matter-of-fact that "I Saw Her Standing There" was written at George's home (by Paul) at 25 Upton Green. Interesting.... here is what others have said:

'According to Beatles biographer Mark Lewisohn, McCartney first worked out the chords and arrangement on an acoustic guitar at the family home of his Liverpool friend and fellow musician Rory Storm on the evening of 22 October 1962. Two days later, McCartney was writing lines for the song during a visit to London with his then-girlfriend Celia Mortimer, who was seventeen at the time herself. The song was completed about a month later at McCartney's Forthlin Road home in collaboration with Lennon.'

Another fun little local memory about those early days:

"George got on (the bus) at the stop at Little Heath and Central Way. My husband who got on at the Eastern Avenue Terminus would often sit next to him and chat when George was on his way to a booking with his guitar! Also often saw him on the last bus back to Speke at night with all the drunks!" ๐Ÿ™ƒ๐Ÿ˜Ž

We've not yet had a "guestbook" at 25 Upton Green, but have thought about that a few times. Well, now we do! Thanks to our recent guest Dominyka.

She left this 'Sgt. Peppers' cool notebook (which does seem to match our decor in the front room) for future house guests to use and sign. And, she wrote the first page, along with some general instructions.
We hope this guestbook becomes part of "the story" of George Harrison's former home.

A couple more cool old stories from people who were there at the time, in Speke :

(Peter) "I grew up in Upton Green, number 8, and often used to hear the Beatles playing in the outside shed (at number 25) prior to their fame. When we used to go to Bewley's van several of us kids would listen to them playing." **Bewley's van was a mobile little shop that would set up in the alley behind George's back garden.**

(Maureen) "George fixed my husband's guitar and there was 3 of the Beatles at his old family house. My husband lived in Little Heath Road- around the corner from George."

Before the Beatlemania.... there are plenty of these kinds of little recollections if you talk to enough people around town.
