❤️ “Who is your ideal guest?”

I’ve been asked this question quite a few times over the years.
And until recently, my answer was always…
“I honestly don’t know!” 🤷🏻‍♀️

We have had such a wonderful mix of guests that I never really thought about having an “ideal” one.
Then, a couple of weeks ago, I had a bit of a lightbulb moment. 💡

Actually… I do know.

⭐️Our ideal guest is someone who loves the great outdoors.
⭐️Someone who enjoys getting out for the day, knowing that when they come back to Hafren Forest Hideaway, they can relax and be looked after.
⭐️Someone who appreciates good old-fashioned home-cooked food.
⭐️Someone who likes a comfortable, clean place to stay, without everything having to be complicated.
⭐️While you’re out enjoying Mid Wales, we are quietly getting things ready for your return, cleaning the shower rooms, freshening the communal areas and making sure everything is ready for you to relax.
⭐️⭐️And perhaps most importantly…
⭐️Our ideal guest is someone who enjoys people.
⭐️Someone who is happy sitting around our dining table chatting with their own group, swapping stories with other guests, or simply enjoying a cuppa and a conversation.

Whether you are here for trail riding, fly fishing at Llyn Clywedog, walking, cycling, mountain biking, exploring Hafren Forest, or simply spending time with friends and family…

If you like getting outside during the day and being looked after when you come home, you might just be our perfect guest. ❤️

And I think that’s what we have realised after nine years of Hafren Forest Hideaway.

We don’t need to be everything to everyone.
We just need to be us, and find the people who love what we do.

💬 So, tell us… what makes a place feel like the perfect place to stay for you?

🍄 Sometimes you just need nature

This weekend we have had a busy time hosting, and as always we loved it.

After breakfast and before the changeover started, I decided to do something I don’t always manage to do...

Take a little time out for myself.
So I grabbed Bryn’s lead and headed into the woods.
The recent damp weather has brought the woodland floor to life, and I couldn’t resist stopping to photograph some of the fungi appearing around us. 🍄

It was only a short wander, but it was enough.
Enough to breathe.
Enough to notice what was around me.
Enough to remember just how lucky we are to live here.

And perhaps that’s one of the things I love most about Hafren Forest Hideaway.💕

Our guests don’t always need a packed itinerary. Sometimes it’s a walk through Hafren Forest, sitting quietly with a coffee, watching the wildlife, enjoying the views or simply wandering without having anywhere you need to be. No agenda.
No rushing.Just time to enjoy being here.

Then it was back to the Hideaway, stripping beds and getting ready to welcome our next guests. 😊
Because while we absolutely love being busy and looking after our guests, we also understand why taking a little time to slow down matters.

And we’re very lucky that Hafren Forest is right on our doorstep. ❤️

🍂 September has a feeling all of its own here in Mid Wales.

For me, it’s the little signs that the seasons are changing.

The hedgerows are full of berries, ready to become puddings with homemade meringues. The Mountain Ash trees are heavy with bright red berries, and after the first proper September rain, the peat becomes wonderfully... well, peaty. 🌧️

We have even had our first frost already.

The rivers and waterfalls are beginning to run again after the drier summer months, and there’s something rather special about hearing water rushing through the forest.

Then, as the evenings draw in, the woodburner gets lit and the lounge becomes the perfect place to settle down with a board game, a good chat and perhaps a glass of something.

This is one of the things I love about Hafren Forest Hideaway.
You don’t need to fill every minute of your stay.
Sometimes it’s a walk through Hafren Forest, a day exploring the Cambrian Mountains, fishing at Llyn Clywedog, followed by a warm shower, a comfortable lounge and nowhere you need to be.
September feels like an invitation to slow down a little.

And I think we could all use a bit of that.

🍂 What’s your favourite sign that autumn is on its way?

🚵‍♂️ Three days on the bikes and a bit of exploring
Darren has just had three days out on the mountain bikes with his mate Darren, who regularly makes the journey over from Cornwall to get some riding in.

They made the most of a few different places this time, starting out in the Dyfi Valley and riding the Climachx Trail and Tony the Tiger.

They also met some lovely local riders along the way who stopped for a chat. They didn’t get the chance to ride together this time, but hopefully they’ll bump into each other again and get out on the bikes together another day.

Nant yr A***n was also on the list, before they headed further afield to the park at Wrexham.

Three days of riding different trails, exploring new places and catching up with good company.
And each day both Darren’s came back very happy, which I think says it all! 😂

It’s easy to forget just how much there is to ride within reach of Hafren Forest Hideaway. We get guests travelling from all over to ride in Mid Wales, but Darren is lucky enough to have so much of it right on his doorstep.

Then it’s home, get the kit sorted, put the kettle on and settle down for something to eat.
It really is a pretty good place to live, work and play ❤️

So, mountain bikers...
Where are you next riding??

🍎 There’s one thing our reviews mention again and again...
Sarah’s cooking! ❤️

And honestly, that makes me incredibly happy because cooking for our guests is something I genuinely love.

Food is a big part of what makes people feel looked after. After a day out exploring Mid Wales, walking in Hafren Forest, riding the trails, fishing at Llyn Clywedog or simply enjoying the countryside, there’s something rather lovely about coming back to a proper home-cooked meal.

I’m not trying to create restaurant food. I’m cooking the sort of food I would want to come home to, tasty, comforting, generous and made with plenty of love.

And sometimes it’s the simple things that seem to make the biggest impression.

A homemade apple pie. A hearty evening meal.
A cooked breakfast to set you up for the day.
And, of course, plenty of tea cake.

For me, cooking is another way of looking after our guests. It’s part of what makes Hafren Forest Hideaway feel like more than simply somewhere to sleep.

And judging by the reviews... I think home-cooked, simple, tasty meals are just what our guests want 🥰

🚴‍♀️ Sometimes you just have to put the jobs down and go and enjoy what’s happening on your doorstep!

This morning was a little different for us.
After cooking breakfast for our guests, we headed into our local town Llanidloes to experience the excitement of the Lloyds Tour of Britain Women coming through our local town.
Stage 4 started right here in Llanidloes this morning, with the riders heading off on a challenging 138km route through the beautiful Mid Wales countryside to Hay-on-Wye.

And what an atmosphere there was!

The town was buzzing, people lining the streets, and that lovely feeling you get when something special comes to your local community.

Of course, we couldn’t go into town without making the most of it ourselves. 😋

First stop was Hiraeth Llanidloes Ltd , where we enjoyed a really good coffee and breakfast. We love supporting our local businesses and, honestly, the food is pretty special too!

Then it was off to the laundrette...
Yes, glamorous life we live! 😂
We are still being extremely careful with our water usage here at Hafren Forest Hideaway, so the laundrette has become part of our routine while we’re managing our water supply carefully.
We then headed back to the Hideaway to get on with the changeover and everything else that needed doing.

But I’m so glad we took the time to go.
And seeing the Tour of Britain Women racing away from Llanidloes was definitely worth putting the cleaning on hold for an hour or two. ❤️

Have you ever stopped what you were doing to watch something exciting happening in your local town?

Tell us what happened; we would love to hear about it!

🐾 Today, we are giving a little shout-out to someone brilliant with our boy.

Bryn’s been showing a little skip in his right hind leg when running, so we have been getting some help from his veterinary physiotherapist, Amy.

Amy Jones Vet Physio

From day one, she has been absolutely wonderful with him.

What we particularly love is that Amy explains everything in “so we can actually understand it”. She never rushes Bryn, works at his pace and gives him the time he needs, especially when his enthusiasm gets the better of him!

Amy has spoken with our vets when she’s had concerns, advised us when she felt pain relief might be needed, and always takes that extra bit of time to make sure Bryn is comfortable and happy.

That is what we love about working with independent businesses and people who genuinely care about what they do.

You can feel the difference when someone isn’t simply doing a job, but is passionate about the people, or in this case, the slightly crazy Sprocker, they are looking after. ❤️

Bryn absolutely adores her. And, if we are honest, so do we.

We are lucky to have found someone who cares for him with the same patience and attention that we try to give our own guests at Hafren Forest Hideaway.

💬 And this got me thinking...
Who is the independent business or person you wouldn’t hesitate to recommend?

A tradesperson, hairdresser, dog groomer, therapist, café, farm shop... whoever it is, give them a little shout-out below.
Let’s spread some love for the people who genuinely care about what they do. ❤️

😏 Right, settle an argument for us...

You’ve been given a completely free day in Mid Wales.

No jobs to do. (As if 😂😂)
No emails to answer. (I wish 🤞)
No alarm clock.
Just one day to enjoy yourself. 😁
What are you choosing?⁉️

🥾 Walking through Hafren Forest
🚵 Mountain biking on the local trails
🏍️ Motorcycle exploring the amazing Mid Wales roads
🎣 Fly fishing on Llyn Clywedog
🚣 Paddleboarding or canoeing
☕ Coffee, a good view and doing absolutely nothing!

And before anyone says it... you can only choose ONE! 😂

We are genuinely curious because living here means we probably take for granted just how much there is to do right on our doorstep.
So come on... what’s your choice?

🚐 So, what do we actually do when we have got a group staying at Hafren Forest Hideaway on a self-catering booking?

Well… we disappear! 😂

Not quite as dramatic as it sounds.

This weekend, once we settled our guests in and filled the main water tank, Darren and I packed up the campervan and headed off for a couple of days.

We are not going far at the moment because, living in the countryside and relying on our own water supply, we are keeping a close eye on the water levels and checking the tank every day.

Our first stop was Ynyslas, where we had our supper on the beach before taking a gentle stroll along the sand.

Then it was on to Llyn Clywedog Sailing & Paddle Club, where we’re members and can stay overnight in our campervan.

And what a place to wake up! ☀️

Beautiful sunshine, the stunning views across Llyn Clywedog, and the sound of the fishing boats heading out for the start of their competition.

Not a bad way to spend a day off.

We will head back to the Hideaway later to check the water and fill the main tank, then we will probably find somewhere else local to park up and enjoy a little more of our own time.

Our campervan was converted by a local company, LoadRated Van Conversions and we are absolutely loving having the freedom to explore our own patch of Mid Wales when we get a little time away from the Hideaway.

Because even though we absolutely love what we do, we also know how important it is to take a little time out.

🌙 Well... that didn’t quite go to plan! 😂
We had a plan for last night’s eclipse.

Colanders? ✅

Cardboard? ✅

Pinprick hole? ✅

A very enthusiastic attempt at seeing the eclipse? ✅

Actually seeing the eclipse...we failed ❌ 😂

But you know what? It didn’t really matter.
Instead, we ended up sitting outside with our guests, enjoying the evening, taking in the views, chatting, laughing and simply enjoying being here.

There were a few questionable selfies, Darren relaxing in the sunshine with a b**r, and plenty of those lovely little moments that happen when everyone is comfortable enough to just sit and enjoy each other’s company.

And I think that’s something we sometimes forget about when we talk about Hafren Forest Hideaway.

The guest experience isn’t just about the room being clean, breakfast being ready or the shower being hot.

It’s also about the atmosphere.
It’s the conversations around the table.
Sitting outside as the evening draws in.
Sharing a laugh when your carefully planned eclipse viewing turns into a complete failure. 😂
And having the space to simply slow down and enjoy Mid Wales.

That’s the bit you can’t put on a checklist.💕
