Wednesday Wisdom (and a bit of local history!) 🏰📜

Did you know that the Craigside Manor has one of the most unique histories in Llandudno?

Long before it was a hotel, the original house was built in the mid-1800s and called Shimdda Hir (Welsh for 'Long Chimneys'). It was built by a truly fascinating character: Colonel Hugh Mulleneux Walmsley, a prolific author and an officer in the Imperial Ottoman Army! Local legend even suggests his adventurous life and books about African safaris inspired Rider Haggard to write the famous novel King Solomon’s Mines. 📚🦁

Over the years, the building has lived many lives—it was home to the Holden family for generations, served as St. Mary's Convent in the 1970s and 80s, and was even a French restaurant named 'Le Manoir' before becoming the coastal pub we love today.

Oh, and back in 1907, a box containing 500 ancient Roman coins was found buried in the scree just across the road from here! 🪙🏴‍☠️
