The Loire Valley has attracted kings, writers and winemakers for centuries. Leonardo da Vinci arrived here carrying the Mona Lisa and never left.
It's easy to see why.
There are the celebrated châteaux, of course, but also limestone villages glowing pale in the afternoon light, vineyard roads winding towards Bourgueil and Chinon, and river towns that feel remarkably untouched by time.
We've paired some of our favourite homes in the region – from château estates to elegant manor houses – with a new guide to the Loire Valley, covering where to stay and what makes this corner of France so compelling.
