From courtyard parties in the 1980s to rosé lunches in 2026, The Stafford has always been a place for bringing people together.

These archive photographs capture one of the many events hosted in our courtyard more than 40 years ago, with live music, flowing drinks and guests gathered beneath the London sky.

For generations, The Stafford has provided the setting for memorable occasions, from elegant summer celebrations to exclusive dining experiences.

On Friday 18 July from 12pm, we continue that tradition with our Château d’Esclans Rosé Lunch, celebrating exceptional rosé, seasonal cuisine and great company in one of London’s most charming hidden courtyards.

The American Bar in the 1960s — before the layers.

Before the shelves filled up, before the walls carried decades of stories, it was a simpler space. A bar, a few seats, familiar faces.

Then came Charles Guano.
A constant behind the bar for 42 years, known just as much for his character as his craft.

The collection didn’t start as a collection.
It started with a gift.

An American guest gave Charles a small wooden eagle. Soon after, a Canadian guest left behind a small Eskimo figure. Charles kept both.

And then it continued.

Piece by piece, guest by guest, the bar began to change. What you see in the later images is that gradual build — objects appearing where there was once space, stories stacking up over time.

Nothing forced. Nothing formal. Just moments left behind.

Today, it’s hard to find an empty corner. Every wall, every shelf holds something — artefacts, letters, photographs — each one tied to someone who once sat at the bar.

It’s less a collection, more a record of everyone who’s passed through.
