HOW TO SPEND CHRISTMAS IN A HOME AWAY FROM HOME 🎄

Christmas doesn't have to happen at home to feel like Christmas. A beautiful country house, French château or cosy cottage with a roaring fire can make the festivities feel all the more special.

The trick? Bring the traditions you love, make room for a few new ones and leave the Christmas logistics behind.

Here's our little guide to getting it just right ↓

1. BRING A LITTLE CHRISTMAS WITH YOU

Favourite stockings, a much-loved board game or the family Christmas playlist. Small traditions make somewhere new feel familiar. Some of our homes even offer festive decorations, so check what's waiting for you before you arrive.

2. MAKE CHRISTMAS EVE AN OCCASION

Explore a festive market, pick up regional treats or head to the local pub for a Christmas Eve drink. You might discover a new tradition worth keeping.

3. PLAN THE FEAST, NOT THE FUSS

Arrange a food delivery, share the cooking or ask our Concierge team about private chefs, catering and fridge-stocking services. More time around the table, less time standing over the oven.

4. GIVE EVERYONE A LITTLE SPACE

Christmas with the whole family is wonderful, but so is having somewhere to escape for an hour. Think grand dining rooms, cosy corners, games rooms and enough bedrooms for several generations (and perhaps the dog!).

OLIVER’S HOME OF THE WEEK | Villa Azahar

Comporta has mastered the art of looking effortless. Rice paddies turn bright green in early summer, pine forests run towards the Atlantic, and mile after mile of white sand keeps this corner of Portugal feeling wonderfully wild, despite its increasingly glamorous reputation.

Villa Azahar sits near Melides, tucked away among the greenery and within easy driving distance of the coast. The house itself is all low-key polish: light-filled interiors, landscaped gardens and doors that draw you outside to a private heated pool, tennis court and plenty of shady places for lunch.

Five en-suite bedrooms sleep ten, but it’s the little luxuries that really give this one an edge. Five hours of housekeeping are included six days a week, and there’s even a complimentary home-cooked meal each day – lunch or dinner, you decide. Which means considerably more time for the pool, a game of tennis or doing very little at all.

When you do leave, make for the long Atlantic beaches, wander around Melides or drive a little further for seafood in Setúbal. Praia da Aberta Nova is around 12km away, and having a car here is essential – although once you’re back behind Villa Azahar’s gates, you may be quite happy to disappear again.

If the walls of Chevaliers Gatehouse could talk, they’d have a lot to get through.

For the next instalment of our Homes with History series, we’re heading to the Shropshire countryside and a Grade I-listed Elizabethan gatehouse whose guest list spans more than 500 years.

In 1483, the young King Edward V is reported to have stayed here on his journey to the Tower of London. Almost two centuries later, Prince Rupert of the Rhine, nephew of Charles I, hid here during the English Civil War in 1646.
ㅤ
The centuries haven’t been polished away. Guests still enter through a 16th-century cobbled archway, climb the original oak spiral staircase and find Tudor fireplaces, painted ceilings, exposed beams and antique furnishings throughout.

Even the bedrooms have stories behind them. The enormous top-floor Prince Rupert Suite is named after its royal visitor, while the Thatcher Suite marks a much more recent chapter: Margaret and Denis Thatcher spent two nights here in 1994.

Today, Chevaliers Gatehouse sleeps four across two suites, with roll-top baths, a Tudor-style dining room and a private garden filled with flower beds, fruit trees and a fountain. Bridgnorth and Much Wenlock are both just a few miles away, with the Shropshire countryside waiting beyond the gates.

OLIVER’S HOME OF THE WEEK | Chalet Icon

Courchevel might be synonymous with winter, but the mountains have two very different seasons worth travelling for. Snow-covered pistes and fireside evenings for the next few months; green valleys, alpine lakes and long days outdoors come summer.
ㅤ
Chalet Icon is made for both. Tucked into Courchevel 1550, with the nearest piste just 150 metres away, it puts the Three Valleys within very easy reach when the snow arrives. Back at the chalet, there’s an indoor heated pool, hammam, sauna, outdoor hot tub and home cinema waiting for the post-ski hours.

There’s plenty of room to bring everyone, too. Eight bedrooms sleep up to 15, including a family suite with its own bunk room for four, while the main living spaces pair mountain views with a roaring fireplace and terraces looking out across the Alps. A chalet manager and concierge are on hand throughout your stay, with catering and a private driver included during certain winter weeks.

Winter dates are already calling, but we wouldn’t overlook Courchevel once the skis are packed away. Chalet Icon opens again for July and August, when days can be spent hiking, cycling, climbing and swimming in mountain lakes before coming home to the terrace. Same chalet, very different Alps.

HOW TO TURN 24 DAYS OF ANNUAL LEAVE INTO 57 DAYS OFF IN 2027 👀

Anyone else suddenly looking at their friends a little differently over breakfast? 👀

With Traitors fever very much back, we’ve been thinking about what it takes to host your own Traitors-inspired getaway. The answer? A grand house, a long dining table and a group of people who claim they can be trusted.

So, naturally, we’ve found the homes for it.
