The team are at the People & Skills Conference 2026 today in Loughborough!

This is an event focused on the future of skills, workforce development and the role organisations play in creating stronger, more resilient workplaces which is a conversation we’re always passionate about being part of.

If you’re attending, come and see us. We’ll be talking about how leadership, engagement and wellbeing connect directly to skills development and long-term performance and how independent assessment can give you the clarity to move forward with confidence.

This morning, we're in Manchester and we're here to celebrate.

Over the past year, a brilliant group of Northern organisations have done the hard work of investing in their people. Today is about recognising what that takes, and what it makes possible.

We're joined by Petra Velzeboer, who'll be leading a session on trust under pressure, exploring why trust so often erodes during periods of change, and what HR leaders can do to rebuild it in a way that actually lasts.

And we'll hear directly from the people living it. Our accredied panel will bring together three leaders who know what it means to put their people first, even when things are hard.

Proud to be celebrating with you all today.

Over 95% of attendees at the Make Work Better Conference - across 2023, 2024 and 2025 - said the conference helped them go back to their organisation and implement positive change.

Not inspiration that fades on the commute home. Actual change.

This year we've added a headline speaker who has spent years exploring exactly what creates that kind of culture. Jake Humphrey, host of The High Performance Podcast, joins Jason Fox, Veronica Hope Hailey, Charlie Cannon and Petra Velzeboer for a full day built around one question: how do organisations build and sustain trust under pressure?

Practical insight, honest conversations, and a room full of people who take the quality of working life seriously.

Most organisations say they're a great place to work. Fewer can prove it.
84% of organisations say they prioritise employee wellbeing. Only 41% have a formal strategy to back it up.

That gap between what your organisation believes about itself and what it can actually demonstrate is where your EVP lives or dies.

We've updated our guide to building an employee value proposition you can actually prove.

One finding from our new research stopped people in their tracks more than any other.

33% of C-suite leaders say they've avoided speaking up about mistakes they made at work. That's more than twice the rate of the average employee.

The same leaders who set the psychological safety ceiling for the entire organisation. The same leaders whose behaviour, more than any policy or programme, determines whether people feel safe to speak up, take risks or admit when something has gone wrong.

It's not a character flaw. It's a culture problem. And it's one that's very difficult to see from the inside.

This is one of six findings in The Trust Paradox, our new research report on trust at work.

Presenteeism – showing up but not fully switched on - costs UK employers £24 billion a year.

That's not a wellbeing problem. It's a performance problem. And it's one that most traditional approaches to performance management aren't built to solve.

When people don't feel trusted, recognised or connected to what they're working towards, they disengage. And disengagement is quietly expensive - in lost output, in turnover, in the gap between what your organisation is capable of and what it's actually delivering.

The good news is that the levers are within reach. McKinsey research shows that organisations prioritising their people's performance are 4.2 times more likely to outperform their peers, with significantly lower attrition.

We've written about what that looks like in practice and how HR leaders can move beyond annual appraisals, build cultures of genuine recognition, and create the conditions where people actually do their best work, even when times are tough.

Trust is easy to lose. Hard to rebuild. Critical to performance.

Most organisations know this. Fewer have a plan for when it breaks.
Restructures that weren't communicated clearly enough. Decisions that felt unfair. Leaders who said the right things but didn't follow through. These aren't dramatic failures - they're everyday moments that quietly erode something it can take years to rebuild.

That's the conversation the Make Work Better Conference 2026 is built around. A full day with five expert speakers exploring how trust is built, lost and rebuilt in modern organisations and what HR and People leaders can actually do about it.

If you've been trying to build a wellbeing strategy without much outside help, you're not alone.

44% of organisations say they need external support with wellbeing – whether that's a comprehensive partnership or just occasional guidance and resources.

The challenge is knowing where to start and having something credible to point to when you need to make the case internally.

We Invest in Wellbeing gives organisations a structured, independently recognised framework that covers the full picture – from mental health and safety to financial wellbeing, culture, and growth. Something you can build on over time, not just tick off once.

If you're ready to move from good intentions to something real, explore the framework https://bit.ly/4fahyqs
