October in London brings the return of the BFI London Film Festival, and with screenings taking place across the West End, The Welbeck makes a particularly well-placed base for an evening at the cinema.

Our preferred formula is simple: check in in Marylebone, choose a film you know very little about, spend the next two hours completely absorbed, then find somewhere nearby for a late dinner and a suitably overanalysed post-film debrief before heading back to the hotel.

The 70th BFI London Film Festival runs from 7 to 18 October.

Hotel bed afterwards strongly advised.

Rain forecast. Walk still happening.

🌳 Paddington Street Gardens for fifteen minutes of fresh air between showers.

🍂 Regent’s Park for the proper autumn version. Long paths, changing leaves and Frieze Sculpture still dotted through the English Gardens until 1 November.

☔ Hyde Park for when the umbrella, boots and coat deserve a proper outing.

Then back to Marylebone to dry off.

Hot shower highly recommended. Drink downstairs optional, but encouraged.

This October, we have our eye on Yunchan Lim’s all Mozart concerts on 15 and 16 October, followed by The Choir of King’s College, Cambridge on the 21st.

Paul Rothe & Son has been making lunch on Marylebone Lane since 1900: sandwiches made to order, soup by the bowl and an interior that has little interest in keeping up with trends.

Our order? Pastrami, Swiss cheese and pickles.

You arrive in London. You browse a book on Japan.
Twenty minutes later you’re considering Tokyo.

At on Wimpole Street, the shelves are only the beginning: part bookshop, part travel salon, with a team who can turn whatever catches your eye into the beginnings of your next journey.

🌷 Gainsborough Flowers - for the classic Marylebone bouquet. Tucked onto Moxon Street and particularly good when you want to arrive carrying something that looks properly considered.

🌸 The Marylebone Florist - for made-to-order arrangements on Crawford Street and the sort of bouquet you can have tailored rather than simply pick from a shelf.

💐 Marylebone flowers - for the last-minute bunch en route to the train. Right at Marylebone Station, making it particularly useful when you have remembered the flowers approximately five minutes too late.

🌹 Flower Station - for floral emergencies. The Park Road flagship is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Midnight bouquet? Entirely possible.
