Meet Jonge Jan — our first boat and the start of our Hideout journey. 💚🚤

As we celebrate just over a year of The Hideout Collective, we’re looking back at how far JJ has come.

Built in 1906, this 40 ft, 22 ton Dutch barge has plenty of history — and we’re helping her into her next chapter.

From collecting her on a sunny day last year to clearing her out and taking her to P&S Marine Services in Watford, it’s been quite a journey. She’s been lifted out of the water, gutted and blacked, and is currently having new portholes fitted.

A big thank you to the men from First People Housing who are helping bring her back to life. 👏

Two boats, an allotment and a whole lot of teamwork. 💙

From Jonge Jan’s journey from King’s Cross to Watford, to Bramble’s transformation and the work at our Root & Rise allotment — here’s a look at how far our projects have come.

One year in — what’s next for The Hideout Collective?

Our Chief Operating Officer, Mark Woolman, looks back on our first year and shares the plans taking shape for the next chapter.

From The Root & Rise allotment project to our two boats Bramble and Jonge Jan, and Stan the bus, our projects are about creating opportunities for men to learn practical skills, build confidence and work alongside others.

Mark talks about Richard’s contribution, our hopes for a new workshop, and the ambition to help more men find purpose through meaningful, hands-on work.

A new home for The Hideout Collective’s next chapter. 💙

Richard is on the lookout for new premises, with the aim of creating a workshop where men from First People Housing can get hands-on with our boat projects.

The plan is to bring Bramble and Jonge Jan together at the new base—somewhere to work on the boats, share skills and tackle projects as a team.

We’re still searching for the right place, but we’re looking forward to what comes next.

It started with a boat at King’s Cross…

Just over a year ago, Wendy and Mark picked up the keys to Jonge Jan, our first boat. Then came her journey to P&S Marine Services Ltd in Watford.

Since then, the team have been working to get her ready to return to the water. 🚤

Meanwhile, Bramble’s makeover continues. From stripping her right back to creating parquet flooring from reclaimed pallets, it’s taken teamwork and determination—especially when a shower leak meant lifting the new floor and starting again.

And at Root & Rise, our allotment project, the men are gardening, preparing wood and sharing practical skills, along with making the parquet flooring for Bramble.

Two boats, an allotment and plenty of determination. 💙

Sean introduces Bramble—and what a difference several months of teamwork have made.

The team have stripped her right back and turned old pallets into parquet flooring, cutting the wood at Root & Rise. A shower leak meant lifting the new floor and starting again—but the latest progress shows their hard work paying off. 🪵🔧

There’s plenty happening across our other projects too, with Jonge Jan’s transformation underway and gardening, making new flooring and teamwork at our Root & Rise allotment.

It’s been great having men from First People involved in our projects, working alongside the Hideout team — from preparing reclaimed wood at Root & Rise to helping create Bramble’s parquet floor.

Old pallets, teamwork… and a setback we hadn’t planned for. 🪵🔧

Delivered in Butler to our Root & Rise allotment, these pallets were broken up and cut down to size by Richard, Sean and the team—ready to become parquet flooring aboard Bramble.

Then a leak meant the first floor had to come back up. Not the plan, but after some TLC, the team are laying it again, piece by piece.

From pallets to parquet — Bramble’s makeover is taking shape! 🛠️💙

We picked up the keys to our 40ft narrowboat in January, and here’s a look at the progress over the past couple of weeks.

The flooring started life as pallets, carefully cut to size at our Root & Rise allotment before being fitted on board. A leak meant lifting it and refitting it — a setback, but the floor is now nearly there and looking good!

A huge thank you to the men from First People Housing who have been helping give Bramble a new lease of life. Your time, effort and patience are making a real difference.
