The Story of The Snooty Fox, Lowick 🦊🍺
At the heart of the picturesque village of Lowick stands one of Northamptonshire’s most characterful pubs – The Snooty Fox.
While many know it today for its food, atmosphere and warm hospitality, the building’s story stretches back much further. Originally a dower house connected to the nearby Drayton Estate, the property later became an inn known as The White Horse around the turn of the 18th century, beginning more than 300 years of hospitality in the village.
Over the generations, the inn welcomed travellers, farmers, estate workers and villagers alike. Sitting in the shadow of historic Drayton House and surrounded by beautiful Northamptonshire countryside, it became a focal point of village life where news was exchanged, friendships were formed and local history unfolded.
One of the pub’s most fascinating features can still be found in its old timber beams. It is said that soldiers heading off to war hammered coins into the wood before departing, leaving behind a small token and a silent hope that they would one day return home. Those coins remain a poignant reminder of the men who passed through the pub during uncertain times and of the important role village inns played in their lives.
The village of Lowick itself has roots stretching back nearly a thousand years, and throughout changing times the pub remained a constant presence in the community. From horse-drawn carriages arriving at its door to modern-day visitors enjoying a meal with friends and family, the building has witnessed centuries of change.
During the 1980s, the pub underwent a significant refurbishment and adopted the name The Snooty Fox, a name that has become familiar to generations of locals and visitors ever since. Despite modern updates, the building retains much of its traditional charm, with beautiful stonework, exposed beams and the character that makes it such a distinctive village pub today.
Few buildings can claim to have played such a long-standing role in village life. For more than three centuries, The Snooty Fox has been a place where people gather, stories are shared and memories are made.
Have you spotted the coins in the beams, or do you have memories, old photographs or stories of The Snooty Fox from years gone by? We’d love to hear them in the comments. ❤️
