Here at Vinegar Hill we can offer you fabulous B&B accommodation as well as the chance to learn how to throw a pot on the potters wheel. Our one day pottery course experience gets your creative juices flowing as well as satisfying your stomach with a delicious home cooked sit down lunch ( at lots of tea and cake in the morning!). We also have a gallery of Dave's work which ranges from mugs and jug

s to large one off pieces and hand thrown basins. We are situated a few minutes walk from the beach, just on the outskirts of the New Forest National Park so whether you are filling your day making pots, or just using us as a base to explore the area, there is a huge amount to see and do here.

Our Journey to Japan | Beyond the Tourist Trail

In May 2027, Vinegar Hill Pottery will travel to Japan for two weeks on a journey planned by LUCY ROGERS | TRAVEL EXPERT. Joined by a small group, we will follow a carefully curated route from Tokyo to Mashiko, Kanazawa, Amanohashidate, Kyoto, Tokoname and Kamakura.

Across the trip, we’ll be accompanied by local expert guides who will help bring each place to life, from Tokyo’s older neighbourhoods of Yanaka and Asakusa to Kanazawa’s gardens and samurai district.

The route continues by bullet train and onward through some of Japan’s most distinctive cultural regions: the pine-covered sandbar of Amanohashidate, Kyoto’s temples and bamboo paths, Tokoname’s historic pottery town and the lesser-known temple gardens of Kamakura.

Rather than staying in one city, the journey has been designed to make the most of each region. From busy streets to quiet gardens, coastal views to historic pottery towns, each stop adds another layer to the story of Japan’s landscapes, traditions and sense of place.

A special New Forest order in the making...

These mugs are part of a much larger bespoke order connected to the beautiful , with plenty more pieces still in the works.

Each one is glazed by hand here at Vinegar Hill Pottery, using a thin transparent glaze so the stripe design can still show through underneath.

Soon, they’ll become part of an incredible setting close to home in the heart of the New Forest.

Hello September!

After a little break in August while we were away, we’re delighted to be welcoming people back into the pottery this month.

September means getting back around the wheel, welcoming both new and familiar faces onto our courses, and spending plenty of time in the studio throwing, glazing and working through your orders and commissions.

We’re looking forward to a busy month back at Vinegar Hill Pottery 💙

No two sides of a raku pot are ever quite the same.

Our three-day raku courses take you through the full process of creating your own pieces, from throwing and shaping the clay to glazing and firing. On the final day, we remove the pots from the kiln while they’re still glowing hot before quickly cooling them, creating the distinctive colours, crackles and smoky finishes that make every piece completely unique.

Our September courses are now fully booked, but we still have seven spaces available on our October weekend, so don’t miss this final chance to try raku this year.

One of Japan’s most celebrated pottery towns, Mashiko has been shaped by clay for generations.

Known for its distinctive, earthy ceramics and long tradition of functional pottery, the town was greatly influenced by the Mingei folk craft movement and figures such as Shoji Hamada.

Next May, our journey through Japan will take us, and ten of you, to Mashiko where we’ll explore Hamada’s former home and workshop, see his traditional climbing kiln and visit the Mashiko Museum of Ceramic Art.

We’ll also wander along Mashiko’s pottery street, lined with shops, galleries and studios, with the opportunity to take part in a hands-on pottery class and experience the craft for ourselves.

For anyone with a love of ceramics, this is one part of the journey we’re particularly excited to share.

From round to square ✨

Starting with a simple plate thrown on the wheel, we use our custom template to carefully cut and reshape the clay into one of our square platters.

And because we hate to see good clay go to waste, the offcuts get a second life too, joined and shaped into little leaf-like dishes, perfect as a spoon rest, for olives and nibbles, or whatever else finds its way onto the table.

One of the many glazing techniques we use in the pottery is applying the glaze by hand while the piece turns on the wheel.

For this two-tone bowl, it gives us much more control over exactly where the glaze begins and ends.

The foot is left completely clean, while a fine white rim is kept around the top, creating that contrast between the natural clay and glaze that defines our two-tone pieces.

A simple technique, but one that takes a steady hand. 💙

Our Journey to Japan | The Monjusou Ryokan

Since releasing our exciting Japanese adventure, we’ve received so much interest in the journey and all that we have planned. So, over the coming weeks, we want to share a closer look at some of the very special places and experiences that will make up our two weeks in Japan in May 2027.

First on the list is our stay at Monjusou, a beautiful traditional ryokan sitting on the shores of Amanohashidate in northern Kyoto, an area known as Kyoto by the Sea and home to one of Japan’s Three Scenic Views.

It combines traditional Japanese design and hospitality with beautiful contemporary touches, and we’ll have the chance to experience one of Japan’s most treasured traditions. After soaking in the onsen hot springs, our small group of just 10 will sit down for a truly special dining experience, with dishes shaped by the seasons and ingredients from the surrounding Tango region.

When planning this trip, we wanted every stop to feel like part of an authentic Japanese experience. From the places we stay and the food we enjoy to the crafts, makers and traditions we’ll discover, every part of the itinerary has been carefully chosen to make this a once-in-a-lifetime journey.

And this is just one stop along the way…
