# # The Missing Piece of the Puzzle: A Roman Revelation at Margam 🏛️✨
Think you know **Margam Country Park**? Think again! While we all love the towering Victorian Gothic castle and the haunting ruins of the 12th-century Abbey, a groundbreaking discovery has just added a whole new chapter to this landscape’s 4,000-year history.
Earlier this year, the **ArchaeoMargam** project—a collaboration led by **Swansea University**—revealed the remains of a massive **Roman villa** hiding just three feet beneath the grass! 🏺
# # # Why this is a big deal:
* **The Largest in Wales:** Preliminary surveys suggest this could be the largest stand-alone Roman villa ever found in Wales, featuring at least 14 rooms and a grand veranda.
* **A "Mini Pompeii":** Because the site has been protected for centuries as a deer park, the foundations and floors are exceptionally well-preserved.
* **The Missing Link:** While Margam is famous for its Bronze Age, Iron Age, and Medieval history, the Roman period was always a mystery. This find proves Margam was a major power center and a "gateway" between the Welsh uplands and the fertile coast nearly 2,000 years ago.
Next time you’re walking these grounds, remember: you aren't just walking past a Victorian mansion—you’re walking over the footsteps of Roman elites and ancient leaders.
