It's good to see work is progressing so well.
We can't wait to have this wonderful canal fully open again ❤️

It's been almost six months since the awful breach at Whitchurch on the Llangollen Canal, so we thought we'd provide an update on how the repairs are going.

Such seismic damage was never going to be easy to fix, but we're pleased to say things are progressing well. Roughly 15 million litres of water have been drained from the flooded field, and around 4,000 tonnes of sand have been removed too. This has enabled us to clear up the field and unblock the culvert.

At the same time, we’re pumping about 40 million litres of water every day around the breach site to keep water moving and minimise disruption across the rest of the network.

Our team is now focused on digging out the remaining embankment and restoring the area to its original shape. Layers of geogrid will be used to strengthen it, and where possible, the material that’s been removed will be reused in the new embankment.

This is made more difficult by the site only having one way in and out, but our team has still worked as efficiently (and tirelessly) as possible.

We'd like to thank you all for your continued patience as these essential repairs take place, and we'll of course keep you updated as we progress 💙
