Did you know Donnington Grove has a surprisingly fashionable connection to Regency history?

In 1783, the estate was bought by William Brummell, former private secretary to Prime Minister Lord North.

His son was George Bryan “Beau” Brummell, who would become one of the best-known figures of Regency society and was renowned as a leader of fashion.

So long before Donnington Grove became a hotel, the estate was home to the family of one of Britain’s most famous fashionable figures.

It is a connection that still has a place at Donnington Grove today: our restaurant, Beau’s, takes its name from Beau Brummell and this chapter in the estate’s history.

A small reminder that some of the names you come across here have rather longer stories behind them than you might first imagine.

🏇 Heading to Newbury for the Dubai Duty Free International Weekend?

The racing takes place at Newbury Racecourse on Friday 18 and Saturday 19 September - and if you’re coming into the area, why not make a little more of the occasion?

Less than four miles from the racecourse, Donnington Grove makes a lovely base for race day - or an even better excuse to turn it into a weekend.

Wake up surrounded by 500 acres of countryside. Take your time getting ready. Enjoy a glass of something sparkling before heading out for the day, knowing you’re only a short distance from the action.

Then, when the racing is over, your evening can carry on at a gentler pace - with a drink, something to eat and a comfortable room waiting for you.

If that sounds like your kind of race weekend, why not make a stay at Donnington Grove part of your plans?

September has arrived at Donnington Grove. 🍂

Summer hasn’t quite left us yet, but if you look closely around the estate, there are already little signs that the season is beginning to change.

A different light, the first leaves turning, berries appearing in the hedgerows… and plenty of quiet corners still waiting to be discovered.

What’s your favourite time of year for a countryside walk?

Behind the Doors of Donnington Grove…
What lies beyond Door 114?

Sometimes, a hotel stay is simply about slowing down.

Room 114 is one of our Classic Double rooms in the Manor House - simple, spacious and full of character, with high ceilings, traditional sash windows and original features that give the room its own sense of place.

It’s an easy space to settle into: perhaps a glass of w**e, something good to watch or read, and a little time to unwind before dinner - or after an evening out in Newbury.

And if you’d rather stay in, food and drinks can be ordered from the hotel bar to enjoy during your stay.

Sometimes, the nicest part of getting away is having nowhere else you need to be.

Did you know the story of Donnington Grove goes back more than 250 years?

In 1763, John Chute was commissioned to design Donnington Grove in the distinctive Strawberry Hill Gothick style - part of the early Gothic Revival movement in England.

Chute was a close friend of Horace Walpole and a member of his “Committee of Taste”, the group involved in creating the famous Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham.

That architectural influence can still be seen around Donnington Grove today, from its Gothick-headed windows to the distinctive porch tower and other details of the house.

So next time you walk towards the Manor House, take a moment to look up.

There’s rather more history above your head than you might realise. 👀

We’ll be uncovering a few more pieces of Donnington Grove’s story throughout September.

Ever wondered what’s waiting on the other side of the Donnington Grove gates?

Come through, cross the bridge and take your time…

You might find the ducks lingering after breakfast, young swans enjoying the lake, and a few geese making the most of the windfalls beneath the apple trees.

Keep wandering and you’ll spot the Manor House in the distance - your destination, perhaps, for a bite to eat or something to drink.

And along the way? A few hidden corners, old walls and little details you may never notice from the road.

Donnington Grove can feel wonderfully tucked away in the countryside, but if you’re local to Newbury, it’s closer than you might think.

So if you fancy a leisurely stroll this weekend and somewhere a little different to explore, come through the gates and see what you find.

We’ll be here to welcome you. 🌿
