A proud moment for The Wheatsheaf Inn !

For us, sustainability is about much more than what happens inside the pub.
It’s about people, our village, our heritage and the nature around us — and, most importantly, about working together.

We’re very grateful to the people and organisations who have become part of this journey, including Exning New River Association and Eco Exning The Prospects Trust, Nethergate Brewery & Distillery Exning Parish Council colleagues, local volunteers and community groups.

Together, through our
Sustainable Exning Series
and the projects we are developing, we’re creating opportunities for people to connect, learn, protect our local environment and celebrate what makes Exning special. 🌱🐦

Thank you to the British Institute of Innkeeping (BII) for recognising the work we’re doing. We’re very proud to display our new Sustainability Champion status — and even more excited about what comes next.

BUILD FOR NATURE – BIRDHOUSE WORKSHOP

Something small can make a big difference. 💚🐦

Saturday 19th September,
we’re getting together at The Wheatsheaf Inn Exning, to give some recycled materials a new purpose — by turning them into little homes for our local birds! 🏡🌳

We’ll be assembling bird houses from recycled pieces that have already been prepared and cut to a simple template, so there’s no complicated woodworking or DIY skills needed.

Just bring yourself, your imagination and a little love for nature! 🔨🌿

🪵 WHAT ARE WE DOING?

♻️ Reusing recycled materials that might otherwise go to waste
🔨 Assembling our bird houses from prepared pieces
🐦 Learning a little about the small birds that live around Exning
🎨 Adding a bit of personality to our creations
😂 Giving each bird house a funny name!

And then our little houses will have a purpose…

🌳 Some will become part of our Sustainable Exning project, ready to be placed in suitable local green spaces and conservation areas, including around our beloved chalk stream .

🏡 Where possible, children will also be able to make a bird house to take home for their own garden.

We’re keeping this one small and hands-on, with around 10–15 places, so everyone gets a chance to get involved.

🏆💚 Well… we have some lovely news!

The Wheatsheaf Inn has been named a FINALIST in the PubAid Community Pub Hero Awards 2026, in the Community Sustainability Hero category! 🌿

We honestly didn’t expect this, and it means a lot to have the work we’ve been doing with our little community recognised.

From litter picks and nature projects, to art days, children, families, local groups and three generations coming together — it’s never been about doing something big. It’s about lots of small things, done together. ❤️

And now our little Exning pub is heading to the
House of Commons on 8th September! 🏛️🥂

Whatever happens on the night, we’re already very proud to be representing Exning.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of it. This one is for all of you. 💚
