Troops from the 14th Battalion, The Royal Irish Ri**es, 109th Brigade, 36th (Ulster) Division aboard the paddle steamer 'Empress Queen' on the journey to France in October 1915.
The information given is that the Battalion were training and based in Seaford in East Sussex until October 1915.
We are told that they left Southampton docks at 7pm on Sunday the 3rd of October 1915 en-route for Boulogne.
Sunset would have been around 6.30pm, yet they are asleep in sunshine. They arrived in France on the Monday the 4th, we wonder what time of the day this photo was taken
Two soldiers are "looking out for submarines".... on a journey from Southampton to Boulogne which is over 100 miles, we thought that a trip from the port of Newhaven which is only 3 miles from Seaford and only 50+ miles from Boulogne would have been less dangerous.
