Heatwave Cornwall and we finally retreated indoors to the cool stone building The horses came in from their fields sweating miserably and had to be hosed down and the cat? Well he stayed indoors.
The garden? Well! It’s billowing in that flamboyant mid summer way. The coppery phormiums have sent dramatic flowers above the border, orange day lilies vie with blue agapanthus with all the cacophony of the summer garden.
Well yesterday I has to drag a reluctant Toffee from his stable in the morning. He knew OUTSIDE was a bad idea and returned crusted with sweat. Lizzie refused to go anywhere and just loitering puffing dramatically beside me. They’ll be lucky today though- in by lunchtime for the blacksmith and then hooves up for the rest of the day What did the song say “only fools and horses work” The Ednovean horses have renegotiated that one!

The shadows have returned to the garden casting new patterns across the lawns in the evening light. The echiums race to the sky is nearly done but for a few more days I’ll leave them huddled in silent mutiny on the garden edges. Maybe they’re plotting to go to sea? Yesterday’s sunshine at Ednovean Farm such a joy (and the B&B washing dried!!)

The fog has held us captive for days it seems as the government has issued warnings about the sunshine. The B&B washing has drooped in the moral high ground of no tumble dryer and come in wetter than it went out with each false dawn of the clouds lifting. Finally Charles took me for a consoling supper to The Coach and Horses and today?! Yes today there’s a flutter of sunshine warming the air and I’ve battled back to washing line with a fresh resolve to buy a tumble dryer before they’re banned!
The garden seems to have enjoyed itself though and emerged fresh and green into the summer once more.

Onwards towards the summer solstice - does that even seem possible- and our entrance garden has changed her clothes again to agapanthus, fennel and lavenders. They have seeded themselves of course- I sure I don’t plan that far ahead but it’s interesting to follow the tiny box flanked oblong as it metempsychosis with each month.
I do believe that the clouds have lifted just a little this morning and we can see across the valley for the first time in days. Take care on the roads though if you’re driving into Cornwall- there’s been a nasty spate of accidents on the A 30 over the last couple of days. And Sammy!? He’s had a great morning patrolling up and down the courtyard and inspecting the breakfast rooms for fussing. Definitely a good morning for him!!

Yesterday we were wrapped in a womb like grey that swirled more like low cloud than mist. The garden had a big treat though, when Keane Trevaskis arrived to shape the Italian garden entrances for access for our guests and the first trim of the difficult date palm leaves. This is a dangerous activity believe me, as the fronds are laced with spear like thorns at their base and need handling with care. One slip and it’s a trip to casualty.
I thought I should at least try to share the misty garden this morning but forgive me if you’re underwhelmed! Sam has decided the bast course of action is to sleep on my feet. Sensible cat!!

The sunshine has returned to the garden casting its certain magic over the nooks and crannies again. So take a stroll with me into the Cornish summer with the sea glittering in the bay that cossets the village.
