Rosedale East is a cracking reminder that the North York Moors were not always as quiet as they look.

These calcining kilns were part of Rosedale’s 19th-century ironstone industry, where ore was roasted to drive off impurities and reduce its weight before being taken out by rail. The Rosedale Railway linked these remote workings with the wider iron and steel world of Teesside and beyond.

Did you know? The East Mines became part of a Scheduled Monument, with the kilns, mine remains and old railway trackbed still marking the scale of what once happened up on these hills.

Northern Perspectives capturing the North’s industrial past where it still cuts through the landscape.

Beautiful Rosedale 💚💙🩵

Rosedale East Calcining Kilns - a big industrial scar in a very beautiful dale.

This was once part of Rosedale’s 19th-century ironstone industry, where ore was roasted in the kilns before being taken away by railway towards the ironworks of Teesside, Tyneside and County Durham. The process drove off impurities and made the load worth hauling across the moors - hard, dirty work in a place that now looks almost peaceful again.

Did you know? Rosedale’s ironstone boom was so intense it became known locally as the “Yorkshire Klondyke”.

Northern Perspectives captures real places across the North, including the old industrial remains that explain how much work once went into these landscapes.

For seven years, Paula and I have been feeding other people’s retreats.

We’ve stood in retreat kitchens before sunrise.

We’ve watched people arrive exhausted.

We’ve watched them leave lighter.

Not because of anything magical.

Because they finally slowed down.

Because they were given permission to breathe.

Because they sat around tables with people who understood.

Because they were nourished.

Over the years we’ve lost count of how many times people have said:

“You should run your own retreat.”

Truthfully, we never felt ready.

We were busy building.

Learning.

Experimenting.

Creating.

Supporting other facilitators.

But eventually the messages became impossible to ignore.

So we listened.

And this September, we’re opening the doors to the very first Natural Balance Kitchen Experience.

Three days of plant-based cooking.

Juicing.

Gut health.

Fermentation.

Raw desserts.

Gluten-free baking.

Morning yoga.

Relaxation.

Conversations.

Beautiful food.

Beautiful people.

And the opportunity to step away from the noise for a few days and reconnect with yourself.

No pressure.

No perfection.

No food rules.

Just nourishment.

The kind that feeds more than your stomach.

If you’ve ever messaged us asking when we’d create our own retreat…

This is it 🌿

And we’d love to welcome you into the kitchen.

Drop me a DM for the full retreat information. Or see the link in our bio
